A friend of mine has a Samick grand. His technician put graphite on the knuckles to lower friction. Want to lubricate them with Teflon powder. How can the knuckles be cleaned?

Use a brush and a vacuum cleaner. Some of it will remain, so one can only do the best one can.

Thanks BDB.

On another forum one advised a dry clean buckskin cleaner. Do you have any advise on that?

You can also try some compressed air to dislodge as much of the graphite as possible. Probably want to do this outdoors. Then apply the teflon powder. If the graphite was applied in a solution of some sort-the buckskin could be ruined.

I have used white spirits on a rag to clean some graphite from knuckles. It is similar to dry cleaning fluid.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will start cleaning without using 'solvents' but when sticky graphite is used (I am afraid that's the case) I will gently try to use the white spirit.

Pity there are still (old school?) piano technicians that use graphite...

Cheers,
Hans
