That is sad. I cannot understand why someone would do something like that...

There is already a thread started discussing this incident. However, the picture you have doesn't have the yellow police crime-scene tape around it. http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubb...einway_piano_overturned.html#Post2487763

The debate going on in the other thread is whether it was an accident or a crime... my vote is vandalism. (But I could be wrong).

You can see in this picture that the keyslip is missing and the keys have moved off the keyframe some. The fallboard lock also looks to be distorted from the fall board being forced up. The action could have some serious damage, such as bent action frame and split keyframe ends. The case could well have split some where the cornice joins the rim because of the mass of the plate being jarred. Some plate screws might be stripped out as well. The plate could even be cracked at the struts near the nose bolts.

The standard casters used for many years do need to have the sockets lubed with a very slight amount of grease and the axles need to have a very slight amount of machine oil on them. If they are treated this way and the caster sockets are not damaged a piano will be able to be moved around a room without too much difficulty. If the floor has deep carpet, that does present some problems. If the carpet is firm and closed loop, one only needs to lift each leg every few feet to allow the carpet "bulge" to drop back. You can lift each corner by getting under the corner of the piano on your hands and knees and using both your arms and legs to lift the piano just slightly off the floor. This takes only modest strength, but your stature must be large enough that your back reaches the underside of the piano easily. If you are 5' tall this might not work.

If one has some infirmity or is small in stature, moving any piano is difficult and they should get help.

Vandalism is incomprehensible to me. If they had stolen the piano and sold it, or even held it hostage for ransom, I could understand that, but not simply damaging things.

Have you ever seen a bunch of drunk Midwestern frat bros? What could be a more HILARIOUS affront to delicacy and decorum than to flip the piano! HAW HAW! Then they gotta right it with a professional mover. But it's all good, right? Those things are durable. And if not, they're like what, 9, $10,000, right bra?

What, pray, are frat bros? I immediately thought of fraternal and brother but was disturbed by the tautological nature of such a combination.

It is clear to me that the police would be well advised to seek out some admirers of early music. This has all the hallmarks of a protest against the use of modern instruments in the playing of 18th century works. It could even be the work of the so-called Scarlatti Brotherhood. I wonder if they are frat bros?

Frat bros = fraternity brothers.

This could easily have been the act of fraternity brothers or the equivalent. If so, I hope it does not get dismissed or minimized by being called a "prank," even a prank gone wrong. It is not a prank, it is a criminal act; vandalism, whether called "hazing" or some other domesticated term, is a crime. I have been horrified lately by the media calling many things pranks that are, in fact, not pranks at all, but rather malicious crimes that lead to enormous harm. Here, the harm is financial, and thus fixable, but in other situations the harm has included death by hazing or suicide by the victim.

I can imagine the scenario: the police find a group of "kids," probably illegally drunk, who wanted to wheel the piano away "as a joke." Because they had no idea how to do this, the piano (miraculously) flipped itself over. Apologies all around, bills are paid, records expunged. I wonder what the next "prank" of this group will look like?

Per the article:

"According to the New York Piano Company, the Steinway pianos can cost anywhere from $78,000 to $90,000."

Gee - more like $148K+ for a new D !!

Perhaps the New York Piano Company is finally admitting how much their pianos are actually worth. grin

And since this is a chapel, I'm surprised the alleged vandals didn't try to play with any exposed organ pipes like boomwhackers.

You are all assuming this to be the work of vandals. I wonder if it was a music critic.

Every experienced piano mover knows that if you lift the bass leg too high, you risk the possibility of overtoppling the piano. If it were to be done with a purpose, a grand can easily be flipped. This would normally take some real effort with a concert grand, but those hideous hyper-offset "clown-shoe" casters make it much easier.

In police lingo, "look for leads" means, waiting for a snitch.

I thought they were looking for leads in order to change the weight of the action.

One of many admirable qualities of the British policeman is his power of observation. Same in Kansas I see. K-State Police said the piano received a number of visible scratches and dents and is currently unplayable.

PS What's the gizmo at the bass end of the keyboard?
