Most mathematicians that I know don't play music. I am not talking about light-weight mathematicians. The young ones listen to trash can music.

I know many mathematicians who play music, as well as a lot of top-flight professionals other careers.

There is a Steinway B at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley. I attended one of the best classical piano recitals I have ever heard there, performed by Gülsin Onay, who is married to a number theorist, and a very charming person.

Absolutely! This video has been around a bit, but the message is not diminished.

Thank you for sharing Keith.

I'm a mathematician, and I've been playing the piano seriously since 2008! Though, looking back at my graduate program, only a small handful of people had any musical knowledge or skill.

Was the fact that he was also a violinist the real secret behind Sherlock Holmes' brilliance?

Albert Einstein played violin and some piano.

Not only that, he used to play duets with Adolf Hurwitz, another mathematician. Mind you, Hurwitz did the directing of the duet!

But on a more convincing note, I would gather that at least about half the mathematicians in our Department have some musical talent. We had our own string quartet (the other string quartet in the University was in the School of Music funnily). There are more pianists crowding this place than is comfortable, and often they congregate out of hours to do some, ahem, extra-mathematical duetting and trio-ing. And if they don't play they sing, or do this other kind of music ... mathematics.

I have a feeling that "playing music" while good is probably not quite as good as "reading and playing music" at the same time, because you have to add visual cues as well as transcribing the music and then of course using your fine motor skill and sensory cortex to play the music. I've always felt that that would make musicians less prone to some types of dementia, but it's just an opinion not a fact.

Google has a couple dozen or so acoustic and digital pianos around main campus, including a Bosendorfer. Employees can also take piano lessons (or guitar, drums, voice, etc.) on-site smile
