Help!

Ive just discovered that the (upright) piano Ive been given has cockroaches living in it. I intend to put a fogger in it, but concerned if it would damage the strings/wood.. etc Ive never used a fogger before so im clueless.

So far, ive put in cockroach bait and roach hotels inside it and have yet to find out how effective that is.

Somebody, anybody, with similar experience.. would love ur advise on this... thanks.

no product (liquid or spray) The monsters will leave if the piano plays
have a look at the felts and install some anti moth goodies (solid state things that you can pin inside, one in the top one in the bottom)

not only the strings but the felts leathers parts, may not appreciate sprays

Sorry I confused with arachnids..

I can tell you from experience (former rental property owner), that baiting systems work best for killing cockroaches wherever they are--in the walls, under floors, etc. And if you've found them in your piano, they'll start moving around. They like boxes, and enclosed areas like walls, cupboards, etc, and apparently the piano.

When they're dead, you can vacuum them out of your piano, but you don't have to wait until they're dead. You can vacuum them out alive too. The sooner the better, because they breed quickly. But still put some bait out, because even if you don't see them, they may still be there. It's like antibiotics and an infection: you have to keep taking them, even after you feel better.

Bengal roach spay. Just spray it around the edges behind the bottom board. They die after they walk over it. No residual odor.

Can you identify the species?

The German roach (with the captain's bars on the forehead) needs a dry climate.

It can be killed with heat, per the following chart:
http://www.thermapure.com/pest-services/cockroaches/

Of course, so can your piano!

The more standard roaches I see need humidity. So which one you have may tell you if your piano is too dry or too wet.

I can't imagine a better hiding place for roaches than a piano.

Is this piano in your house already? You have bigger problems now than roaches in the piano.

The other day I updated my Buying a Secondhand piano page to include a section on smells, because someone buying at the budget end of the market might not notice in say a charity depot, that an old piano has a smell of stale tobacco smoke etc. But when it's moved into an insulated draught-excluded centrally heated home, the smell is overpowering. There has been quite a bit of discussion over the years on coping with malodorous pianos. SO I thought I had better include that on my checklist of things to look out for.

Now, I am thinking I had better warn about cockroaches too! I already mention woodworm, so perhaps I will tag it on there.

The perils of secondhand pianos!

Boric acid powder kills cockroaches and should not harm the piano.

I have hopefully no coacroach trouble, but I had moths, the kind that eat wheat, pasta, and the like. I Used pheromones treated traps (glue), it have been very efficient, you see the flying insects irresistibly attracted then glued on the trap. I did get rid of them all easily.
I wonder if such process exist for coacroach.
Probably no, there are buildings in Paris that are infected since their first years and despite regular poisonous treatment. The insect hides in dirty water tubing, between other places..

Thank u. thats how i first discovered they were there.. when i opened it up to examine and vacuum when it arrived at home... saw some dead ones and a lot of their droppings along the baseboard. i knew instantly what i was dealing with frown

i finally opted for a boric acid mix my dad gave me from his pest control friend, dusted along interior edges of the wood and practically the entire baseboard of the piano. i have like a dozen roach hotels stuck around in and outside the piano AND now every corner of the hse.. omg i dont want them in the rest of the hse too LOL

so far, i havent seen any more, cept 2 or 3 that following morning crawling away from the piano

nevertheless, i still dusted poison around the hse corners and set up bait just last night, remembering ur antibiotic advise laugh thanks again

They are famous for hanging out in electrical outlets, appliances, etc.; anywhere that is warm and dry is preferred.

Sufficient heat (like in that chart) will kill all stages of the roach. But it isn't practical in most places. You might get the air in the center of the room warm, but all the cracks and crevices in the walls, pipe chases, under the sink, etc. are not going to get hot enough.

I did make it work in a hospital operating room where we had good computer control of the heating system.

A piano is pretty small, you might be able to heat treat that. But I'd go with poison and baits.

Here's a fun fact about cockroaches hot off the press. I wonder if they can chew through piano strings?
