Does anyone have any information on the various craftsmen who signed their names on parts of their work, such as Steinway bellymen? My 1928 Model L has the signature "Nitzsche" on the underside of the soundboard. I have heard that some of the early Steinway family members, such as William Steinway, were reknowned "bellymen". Another bellyman was "Magnussun". Wondering what other names are known, and perhaps their years. My piano has another signature on the back of the keyboard. Its like a time capsule from the past.

I seem to remember one of the Steinway books saying that the belly dept. was all Scandinavian. My list sure reads like a mid-west phone book.

Where on the soundboard would one find these signatures? I'll ask my tech to look for one on my 1928 Steinway AR.

I have seen the name Szulc stamped on many keyframes.

The soundboard signature is usually found about under the bass bridge. But that varies with the bellyman.

This thread might have answered my question here. Although not a Steinway.

Interestingly, each craftsman has their "signature", whether it is the style of the cut on the bridge notching, or even the way the piece of trim along the soundboard is cut.

Knowing the work of each tech. can help you pick them out based on looking at their work.

My 2 cents,

In the same place on the underside of the soundboard I have "Johnny" as a signature on my 1925 Steinway M in that same style of handwriting of the time. I was so thrilled when I found that - though at first I had thought it was some little kid of the original owner crawling under there and writing his name until my piano tech told me otherwise. I recently had the damper action replaced and there was a large scribbly signature that looked something like "Heinz" on the damper guide rail.

Not to my knowledge or experience but it would be very easy to sign the top of the pin-block before the plate is finally installed and no inspector would know. Not to be ever revealed until the rebuilder gets it.
