Found this on my FB feed this evening from a pianist in Germany along with this text: "Tonight in Frickingen. 1 1/2 hour before the concert...." The post appears genuine, but, in this day and age, it could well be a hoax. Sad either way.

Steinwas? Looks like the right leg broke and it fell over, or some kind of handling mishap.

It is a sports hall as opposed to a theatre so possibly a school concert or similar.

I'm sure it still makes a helluva sound!

The lyre appears to have survived the flip. Guess that answers that question.

We have had this happen locally and it is certainly possible to make the piano right again, as if this never happened.

BUT, an examination is necessary. If the rim, the joints where the beams fit into the rim, the plate, and other such structures have remained intact, this can come out of this as if it never happened.

Here's hoping there was insurance taken out on the rental. Only a fool rents a piano without specific insurance, IMHO.

Well, the piano didn't appear to fall all that far off the platform... 3 feet, maybe? I know it looks bad, but perhaps it is not as bad as it appears in the photos.

I can see where Rich may be right... this piano could be repaired.

However, if I were the buyer, I'd want to know the history of what happened; sort of like a rebuild title on a car/truck/suv. Of course, we all know that is something you don't get when you buy a pre-owned piano. It's just one of the risks involved in buying a used piano.

Being upside down, all of the dampers would be off the strings. Can you imagine the horrible, gut-wrenching sound that made? Makes me shudder.

Question is, which one made the better gut wrenching sound? This one or the Bosendorfer that fell off the back the truck in the UK?

Accidents like this can kill.

This event shows the advantages of laminated rim construction. If this had a been a piano with a pieced up rim the piano would be toast.

My guess is this piano is eminently repairable, although the plate could crack if the metal in the strut areas had some weakness that was not a problem until you shocked the frame like falling upside down does.

I would guess the S&S because it was indoors. Outdoors sounds tend to dissipate quickly.

Stefan Vladar reportedly was able to perform the Brahms concerto on the piano. The damage was mostly external: it’ll need a new lid and perhaps some tweaking inside.
