Butterflies! I've booked my tickets, arrive in Venice around 28 June, just enough time to make it over to Milan. Anyone be in Venice prior want to hook up?
Yippee!

Oh No! I've just been reading back through the thread and hit the "we're at capacity" one. Please tell me I can come, I've paid for my tickets (from Australia, $3,000) and am about to book the hotel. I do apologise not letting you know sooner, it's peak season here and it's almost impossible to say until the minute beforehand.

I will be travelling up to Molvena after I arrive (my mother's birthplace), then making my way to Milan on Thursday, planning to stay at the hotel (if I can get a room) THursday night through Sunday night (checking out Monday).

Hope to meet you all in real life! And I'll bring my duet books too!

Ciao!

I think I forgot to communicate what the rest of the family will do: they will not come, next week the kids will be at a summer camp and on Saturday dad have to go and pick them up.
Sorry for the delay, it's been a very busy period for me!

This may be an odd question, are there laundry facilities in Milano and Venice?
I remember sending some things to be washed at our hotel in Germany, it would have been cheaper to buy new clothes.

They exist, but there aren't many.

I had a look and there are none near the hotel in milan, nor near your b&b in Venice. Diana probably knows more than I do for Venice

Write to Roberto and see whst service they offer. At a b&b it might not be too bsd.

They may slso have a place where you can hang things up, so you could do some hand laundry.

Hello Cheryl, Possibly a dumb question but will I need to bring a coat, or would a normal (suit-type) jacket do (for cool evenings)? Luggage is limited and I'm trying to figure out what to ditch! thanks in advance.

I read it's going to be the hottest summer ever here in Italy but for cool evenings I would wear a light cardigan or a light unconstructed jacket. I never had the need though, unless it rains for days the temperature won't drop almost at all. I don't even recall ever having to wear anything else than a t-shirt and shorts...

A jacket/blazer/sport coat should do. Hopefully the weather is going to be great, last year summer lasted like... 1 month? Or was that 2 years ago?

Definitely not a coat or jacket.
At the most a very light sweater . It might be a little cool in restaurants or even in rhe hotel with air conditioning .

Hoever, it is getting into real summer weather here now.

It was 35°C here today.
Forecast for the week is hot , humid, with some rain.
Bring an umbrella, definitely.
Skirts, cotton trousers, lightweight clothes.

Are we better off bringing cash (USD) and exchanging it for Euros, or using a credit card to get Euros from an ATM?

Do places accept USD, or insist upon Euros?

And finally, will we lose money converting left over Euros back to USD?

USD are not accepted.

I would bring some cash, at least 100 euros. That's my personal approach . I prefer to arrive with a bit of cash in hand.

You have to understand what your bank charges for international cash withdrawals.

In my experience it is better to use credit cards to pay as much as possible. If I do cash withdrawals there is a fee for each transaction and a conversion fee.
So I take a larger sum, but do fewer withdrawals .

As for what it will cost to change back from euros to USD, there are alway conversion fees so you have to try to leave with as little as possible. You're only going to be away for a week, so unless something extraordinary happens internationally, the exchange rate shouldn't go up nor down by much.... you just have to see who offers better rates in your area for conversions back to USD.
.

I just checked the long term forecast for the coming week and it seems we may have a number of showers.

Temperatures will still be around 30°C, not sure what that is in F, but high eighties, low nineties .

Bring small collapsable umbrellas.

You can buy them for five euros from street hawkers but I can almost guarantee you that they will break after 2 uses.
