Vladimir Horowitz' personal piano continues its US tour, and right now it's in Charlotte, NC. We had the piano on our radio station today along with Mark Love and Dutch Adkins from Steinway and up-and-coming jazz pianist Chad Lawson.

give it a listen and let me know what you think:

thanks to Steinway Piano Gallery Charlotte for letting us use the piano!

Greetings,
After his death, the "Horowitz" piano was rebuilt, with new action parts, at the factory. I played it before and after this restoration, and the present version is not like the original. Quite different. The piano, with well-used hammers, had been regulated by Franz Mohr to Horowitz's specs. They were atypical. Upon its return to the factory, Bill Garlick was tasked with re-regulating everything back to Steinway's normal set-up. Then, all the hammers were replaced, which changed everything. When asked about what happened to the old parts, David Grossi, head of the restoration department, said he assumed they were thrown away, since the only production categories at the plant were good parts or not good parts.
I later heard that they had been saved, but who knows?

Regards,

Ed,
Thanks for this explanation. This piano was at Westminster Choir College this past summer. I was surprised when I played it. A very nice piano, but not what I was expecting after reading about how it had been regulated and voiced differently for Mr. Horowitz. What is interesting is all the "signatures" on the bottom of the soundboard. If anyone has a chance to see the piano look at the bottom of the piano-very interesting. I'm going to assume that the soundboard was also replaced when it was rebuilt.

I don't think so. The board was original when I saw it, i.e. I was able to measure the down bearing when it came to Vanderbilt several years ago and found that it was the same as it had been in the factory, (which was virtually nil for two octaves in the middle of the piano). The recording I heard on this thread sounds like an old board, in that the fifth octave sustain is fairly short.
Regards,

I believe the piano was in Vancouver some time ago as well. Such a shame I missed it, I hope it will return here so I can have a look myself!

Thank you for this.
I also played the piano (with Franz' permission) when it was in DC in the seventies and tuned it when it was on tour earlier this century.

Much has been written about this aspect but I would like to add how much I enjoyed what Chad Lawson is doing.

I've always been curious to check out this piano, but still haven't had the opportunity. One of these days!
