Is this a good book for a 2 year piano student of classical approach and want to play some jazz? Is this too difficult or...?

Hi Johan
You might want to look at some digital download sites for jazz, sine you can preview the sheet music and listen to a recording as well.. you can just search for jazz piano.

I look on musucnotes.com only because I like most of the arrangements but I'm sure there are other good ones as well.

I glanced quickly on Amazon, perhaps a little too advanced. I would have to work on each a while and not just read them which probably translates as tricky for two year students.

His "Top 50 Jazz Standards for Easy Piano" might be exactly what you are looking for though. You can hear the arrangement of Misty in the American song book recital- though Ii do improvise the last verse, that's not as written.

  • Debussy - Le Petit Nègre, L. 114
  • Haydn - Sonata in Gm, Hob. XVI/44

I agree. The version of Fly Me to the Moon that I played in the American songbook recital is also from this book.

I self-taught myself for a year than got started with a live teacher. After working with my teacher for a couple of months, she estimates that I'm at a late beginner / early intermediate level. At my level, I'm surprising her with the degree of difficulty (difficulty of a song) I can accomplish. Those songs include a Dan Coates arrangement of (Somewhere) Over The Rainbow from his Ultimate Pop Music Sheet Music Collection book, Autumn Leaves and The Nearness Of You from other books.

Does anyone have an idea of what "year" this puts me at? Would the book mentioned above be appropriate for someone at my level?

I looked at the pieces in the book and while Dan Coates has amazing arrangements, I think this would be too difficult.

I believe Dan Coates also has some books that are labeled early intermediate or late intermediate. If you wanted to stick to his arrangements, perhaps check out these books to see if they have any jazz pieces you want to learn.

Ask yourself how comfortable you are reading music and playing over 4 octaves on the keyboard and if you can easily play polyrhythms, where the LH is playing one rhythm and the RH another, such as 3 against 4. I don't think you can go by the number of years you have played piano. For some people, certain styles and composers suit them better and they find what seems like difficult music not all that hard.

Usually you can copy a page or two from the preview and try it out. If it's really frustrating, try out some easier arrangements, as others have suggested.
