I could use some advise on finding a teacher. I had started back as an older adult several years ago in Florida with a great teacher. Took lessons for about 1 year before I moved to the Rock Hill, SC (just south of Charlotte, NC). I was thinking of doing Skype for my lessons but never got to it. I miss lessons badly and am having a hard time finding someone. I checked the internet without success so far. Mostly finding teachers too far away, only teaching with keyboard, only teaching kids, etc.... I tried the 2 local music stores and only find keyboard instructors. Running out of ideas. Thanks for any help you can give.

Talk to the local piano stores, and local church organists. Also school music teachers. You could also try the Charlotte branch of the NC Music Teachers Assn. Their website is not helpful, but they'll send you a couple names if you ask online:

I suggest going to Winthrop college and enrolling in a group piano class, if they have one. Distinguish yourself and you might get lessons with a prof there, or at the worst you could find out who the local teachers are while getting your chops back.

worth a try

forrest

p.s. I saw Virgil Fox perform on their organ in 1974. Fantastic instrument played by a fantastic organist.

Forrest,
Thanks for the suggestions. Distinguishing myself with a professor will not be possible since I have only had 2-3 years of lessons over my lifetime. I appreciate that you think I could smile I think I will call the college and ck out teachers.

Springtime,

I meant distinguishing yourself in the sense of how diligent you are about learning... not where you are currently.

Teachers love students who work... and more importantly, who want to learn HOW to learn.

I grew up in SC and know that area well.

keep the faith!

Forrest,

Thanks. I contacted Winthrop by email and received a quick response. They sometimes take adult students. We are in the middle of exchanging emails. Hopefully I can get back to some serious piano playing soon. I'll update soon. Thanks

Update:
I have connected with a teacher that is local and connected with the college. She sounds great. I have an "interview" lesson on the 25th. Time to get seriously back to practicing. Hopefully we will connect and lessons will start. smile

Update:

I had my "interview" lesson. All went well and the lessons begin next week. She will be a good teacher and has lots of knowledge. She has also studied "Piano Wellness" which I am looking forward to learning since I have back and shoulder issues. Here's hoping I still have the brain power at my age (late 50's) to absorb and apply the things she will teach. Thanks again everyone for the help and encouragement!

I think you'll find the journey delightful. I didn't study for 20 years and then started back when I was 54 (57 now). I'm relearning EVERYTHNG with regards as to proper technique.

I think I heard this attributed to Neil de Grasse Tyson (sp?)

"It's true that you will probably never be the best at something, but you can always be better"

Age helps you to realize the journey is the goal. Be patient and diligent and watch (feel and hear too!) how your playing gets better and better.

best,

F
