I started learning piano about 3 months ago. I know the basics. I'm not looking to be able to master the instrument, but there are a few songs I would really love to learn. One of them is Comptine d`un autre ete - l`apres-midi by Yann Tiersen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvryolGa19A

I know it depends on how much practice you do etc, but a rough estimate. How long do you think it would take before I could master this song?

I've been learning for one month more than you and a song like this is very difficult for me(I'm with basic method books), but some people are able to dedicate a lot to one particular song. So you tell us if you decide to learn it. smile

A tutorial for your song in Spanish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMetueUfUPQ

Do you want to learn just this piece or do you want to learn any piece of similar difficulty? If you just want to learn only one piece then you might "play" it after practicing it a month or two, but it probably won't sound very good.

I have been learning for a couple of months longer but I don't think this piece is that difficult. If you look at the score the bass is just 4 measures that repeats over and over and the right hand repeats in the second half one octave higher. The rhythm is also very simple. I only tried to play the first part and it wasn't too hard, but I noticed that my left hand hurts after a while and attribute that to having a crappy technique so I stopped playing it. That's the main thing to watch out for us beginners. You can try to play stuff beyond your abilities with bad technique but you're probably going to waste a lot of time and you might hurt yourself too.

Hey JD, he's using a good bit of modified Alberti bass in that left hand which should make it a bit easier. I'd tell you first off to watch and listen to what his fingers are doing in the first FEW phrases and see if you can play it pretty close by ear in say a week or less. There're a lot of repeats if you really listen carefully plus the tune is less than 2 1/2 minutes.

I think you can do it waay quicker than you probably think you can do it, but depends on what basics.

qazsedcft, in my books there is nothing like this one. laugh On that Spanish teacher's webpage, it appears as level 4. But I can also understand that learning a song like this is easy for some people. Not for me.

Sounds familiar, could I have heard it in a film score?

Thank you for your help, everyone. I think the first and last parts of the song will be easy for me as there's a lot of repetition. It's just the middle part that I'm concerned about, and getting the speed right etc.

Although this piece is not complex, the stretch for the left hand is likely to be a challenge and potential injury risk.
I played for 4 years as a teen and am back 2 years as an adult, and I had to pause when learning this because I lacked technique and that was causing pain.
(The stretch itself is easy to reach, but required more or less constantly. The trick is to release it every time and relax your hand, rather than to hold it in order to be "in position" for the next instance).
No comment on how long it would take you to learn. I got it to barely passable in 2-3 weeks FWIW

I came back to piano after 15-16 years... and this was the first new song I mastered. It took 3 days (about an hour practice amongst other things). The key is that the left hand doesn't change... same 4 bars over and over and over.

The right hand is the voice, and it sings, then repeats, goes a little sad, almost repeats the little sad bit... and then goes into the tinkly bit (arpeggios). And the tinkly bit is repeated too. and then back to the beginning to repeat the entire piece but now it's an octave higher.

it's a good stretch for the left hand. think of the left hand as a train going cho cho cho cho or a clock ticking. it repeats and repeats. it doesn't get slower or faster. it just keeps on going. If you get this down first, life is a lot easier. it will become automatic, and you can focus on making the right hand sing.

Go slow, keep on time. Tap or stamp your feet, but keep it in time. if you can play it slow, you will be able to play it at the correct speed...

I've been playing for 6 months, and I think it would take me 2 months to really get it down. I noticed the guy in video has really relaxed hands, and that's what I would have to work on. I know that doesn't answer it for you, but I don't know how well you play at this point, so don't know how fast you are at learning. Well, it's just a guess anyways.

jdesw,

I've been learning piano since last September. I looked up the score for this online and if I practiced this song diligently I would probably have it pretty solidly learned somewhere in the range of 6-8 weeks.
