Yesterday 'rediscovered' Carl Philip Emanuel Bach.......today among others 45 minutes studied Sonata d-minor H.128 / W57.4......... 3hearts
Sonata D-minor H.128 / W57.4

CPE is the mix of Johan Sebastian Bach and Haydn/Mozart; think I'll study more of this composer.

Kind regards,
Johan B

My late teacher had us count everything in a piece using syllables assigned to the smallest note value in that piece. For whole, half and quarter notes, the number of the beat is used, as 123 or 1234 etc.

For eighth notes the syllable "Tay" is used. 1 Tay, 2 Tay etc. this only if the smallest note value is an 8th note

For triplets, 1 la li, 2 la li etc
For 16ths, 1 Ta tay Ta , 2 Ta Tay Ta ( the a in Ta is soft), etc
For 32ns, 1 ka Ta ka Tay ka Ta ka, etc

This was for learning a piece. Once rhythm and notes are well learned, the whole numbers can be used or can be broken to smaller number of syllables , ex: counting 32ns as 16ths, playing two notes to one count each of, 1 Ta Tay Ta , etc.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Think I got it but what I missing understanding how this helps in playing 3 vs 2, 5 vs 8 etc. I have used a pencil to mark how the notes interplay. Does assigning a syllable allow you to skip this step? Sorry if I am being dense, this is just a new concept... your patience is truly appreciated.

3 against 2. N Ta. La. Ta. Li

N La Li is the 3
First 8th with N, 2nd 8th with second Ta.
The first Ta keeps the triplet even

Never had 8 against 5, have to figure it out

Today, Bach's 2-part Inventions.
They are so well-composed!
Beautiful pieces.

Will do some R&B for a while. Give the classical a break.

Bach seems to be popular a.t.m..
More work on a 2-part Invention again.
Putting in more effort into bringing sections up to tempo.
Really good LH practice. Not experiencing any difficulty doing LH, RH, or both together in any order as separate memory processes.
Will be able to listen to either voice or both together, and play what I hear.
I've studied this a long time ago, not completed, but it comes back and makes the re-learning easier.
Confirms my idea, for my playing anyway, that no worries about learning a piece then forgetting it while studying something else.

This morning did a look up of Baroque composers. Wikipedia had a list by genres. Found a composer, not baroque, named D. Magnus, and IMSLP has his piano music. Found a very pretty piece by him, not to hard. Nocturne #3 Op. 125 in key of B flat minor (love lots of black keys!!!). Give it a look and try it out. It really is very sweet.

Looks like you've been having some fun with your exploring, Isabelle1949. smile

When (and if) I advance, I think I'll also enjoy finding "lost" pieces.

Enjoying the work on Bach's 2-part Inventions.
Need to work more on getting the trills fluent and easy.
It's still a challenge to combine everything at the same time...hearing each voice independently, how both work together, and play what I hear.
But the phrases and statements are very clear.
Still reading as a reminder at the start of each practice session.

Johann, the church and organ are beautiful. Seeing the pipes reminded when pipes were delivered to my dad's workshop in long wood boxes filled with excelsior. My dad let me help a little in his shop, very little. Made me feel so big!!!

6/28 Chopin Étude Op 10 No 1, at a snails pace, well maybe an ant's pace. Have no intention of memorizing or learning the whole thing, just think it's a good, different exercise to expand my horizons.

Telemann Overture 1, site read 3 parts, slowly, but not as slow as first times. So pretty, why rush it?

Scarlatti K141, the first half is committed to memory, it's at a fair speed, I would say mid allegro. Once well memorized fully, speed will gradually be increased. It will never be at Mach 1.

Thinking of working on something for a Piano Master Class in 2016, which is a part of the New Orleans International Piano Competition.

1 July

Played the organ of the St.Willibrorduschurch in Kloosterburen for three hours. Mostly works of Bach (Prealudiums and Pastorale BWV590), Böhm and Pachelbell(Choralpartitas) and a lot of Fébure-Wely, because this music from the Romantic period fits perfect to this French-romantic organ. There were interested visitors who came up to the organkeyboard to have a look. Among others there was an woman from Rumania (South Europe) who made a trip through our country. She was a violin-teacher.
Next wednesday I will play again the organ for visitors of this church. Organ St.Willibrorduschurch Kloosterburen

In the evening played diferent pianopieces at home.

Regards,
Johan B

Johann, your experience at the church sounds wonderful. (When I was young, my dad sometimes took me to a church where he had to work on the organ. I remember once he marked one of the organ keys with an "X" and told me to play and hold that key when he was ready. One key, it felt so good.)

This a.m. Sight read thru Bach two-part Invention No. 1, reviewed Scarlatti K 141.

Discovered Busoni editions of the Bach Inventions and Sinfonias with ornaments written out and fingering included. I will be working these now. I think these works will be very educational in many ways.
