I'm interested in a Kawai CX-5, serial number 1778025. I've been told that serial numbers for Japan-made kawai pianos are not printed in black like this one but should be carved like the name KAWAI. It's in good condition, but I worry about how in tune it can be made. Could anyone tell how old it is? (Checked online and got 1980s, but was not sure if I'm doing this correctly).

I'm not a huge fan of that model, but it was made in Japan. It was an entry level model back then, but it may serve your needs. The serials are typically printed on the plate. The serial dates the piano to ~1987.

The age is an issue only if the condition is. Have it inspected; a tech can confirm if the pins are tight and able to be tuned, as well as other issues that may not be obvious.

Thank you. I'm just wondering if this might be a slightly better investment than the pianos available where I am (mostly only lower models of Indonesian-made Yamaha, Kawai and Samick (e.g. Yamaha JU109), and refurbished Yamaha nippon-gakis and Yung Chang from the early 1970s). I am serious about playing and spend much time at the piano, and I mostly want something that won't go out of tune super fast. It's been difficult trying to get an instrument here at home after two years at an all-steinway school, and it's also been hard to find good, informed advice, especially with me knowing little about instruments.

There is not an obvious answer when your budget is below what is readily available. I would choose a new Indonesian made over an older CX-5. As far as the older Yamaha refurbs go, it really depends. I'm not very familiar with Young Chang refurbs.
