Today (lesson day!)...
"Rocket to the Moon," Jim Brickman;
"Notturno," Edvard Grieg;
"Moon River," Henry Mancini - this is my fake book exercise, I have to work out left-hand chords and patterns on my own;
"Polka," from Ballet Suite Number 1, Dmitri Shostakovich.

I'm "rhythmically challenged," to put it nicely, so lots of trying to get the right timing!

Collector of sheet music I can't play.

Today Bach,Hanon #3, and Czerny #3.
Anna M. Bach won't get her Notebook back for quite a while.

So far today, Scarlatti K 141, slowly.mtried to build a little speed but found spots,of hesitation, so will keep it slow for now. Have all on first page memorized, except for last line. Need to go through music and look for repeats. Some analyzing does help with memory recall. In performance you wouldn't be going through the analysis in your head, but by practicing slowly you can. 20+ years ago I would have said "pfft" to this idea of analyzing while learning.

Also, Telemann Overture No. 1, slowly, the rhythms challenge me, but that's good.

Later will review Scarlatti and work slowly to bring back the Bach Invention No. 14. It's been a long time!

BYW, told my husband I was glad he is working outside while I practice so he doesn't have to listen to the repititions. He said it doesn't bother him, just sounds like background noise!!! I know that's not an insult, just his way with words.

Happy piano playing!!!

Always working to improve "Chopsticks". I'll never give up on it.

Haha, Johan...but in a way you're right.
I can play one note exactly like him already!

Today, Czerny.
I like these little studies but the notes up high in the dusty area are rough on my ear.
And the C7 note cannot be played staccato, since there are no dampers up there on my Yamaha U7 piano.
So, I wired up my DX7 style TX-802 together with my KX88 keyboard, and used an electric piano voice with equalization to get staccato and manageable high tinkle.
Now I have 3 different practice areas in the house with a full-size 88-key keyboard.
Now where did I leave that sheet music...hmmm

This morning, reviewed Scarlatti, played slowly. Started pg 2, marked phrases and worked on them in phrase form. Plan to try and put the phrases together tomorrow.

Johann, the best time for me is after 10 pm.

Practiced nothing yet today. Spent the day in French Quarter. Will practice late tonight. Learned I could remove the desk from the piano, close the top completely and this quiets the sound a lot. I will practice when my husband is on second floor with his ear plugs in.

Started Czerny #4 today.
Great mini pieces for My purpose right now.
Memorized more or less in a day.
Then spend an extra day or a few to iron them out.

I had a digital years ago, don't remember the brand, but think it cost about $1500. Didn't like the sound or the touch. Sold it for very little.

Too old to spend that much on another keyboard. Will make sure ear plugs are well stocked.

Memorized the rest of Czerny phrase #4.
Back to the U7 piano, since no high register tinkle here.
I like the effect created in bars 3 & 4...a type of Mazurka.
Not sure if I will move on to the next phrase tomorrow.
Might relax with another Hanon.

Today, Bach Invention two-part No. 14. Trying to get back, also good to loosen the fingers up.

Scarlatti K 141. Taking a different approach. Thinking that since it is to be played rather fast, practicing slowly requires faster key strokes, not faster playing. I hope this makes sense. Thought about it and with slow practice, the key strokes are also slow and longer than it would when it is played faster. In other words when playing faster key will be released much quicker. I think our brain takes in and memorizes everything, including how long we are on a particular key. Seems to have helped so far.

Very little practice this a.m., about 45 minutes. Worked Scarlatti 141, fixed a bug in a couple of descending arpeggios on pg 1, by better fingering. Just for fun, opened my Mozart and tried a little of his Sonata 4, K 282. This did not go well at all. I don't think I was focused enough. There is always tonight and many tomorrows.

Always working to improve "Chopsticks". I'll never give up on it.
