Because my teacher told me to!

Then I'm afraid you will have to play it.

Don't most beginning/intermediate pianists learn them for finger independence and other crucial techniques?

Indeed, many teachers use it in their teaching. I must say I'm not fond of it. It's not beautiful to listen (and to play).

I mainly used J.S. Bach pieces to work on independence. Anna Magadalena little Notebook. Wilhelm Friedmann Notebook, little preludes and fughetta, inventions, sinfonias.

In Bach pieces, a finger plays a melody and another finger of the very same hand is busy playing something else. This situation is very frequent in Bach pieces. This can teach you finger independence. And don't forget the most important, this is beautiful music (which you can't say about Hanon).

But this is just me and my experience. But I'm no teacher or concert pianist. I'm just a guy who plays for his own enjoyment. Don't listen to me, listen to your teacher.

Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you agree with me.

The point is the guy has a teacher. He pays the teacher for the lessons. Why should he pay someone if he doesn't listen to him ?

She's not forcing me: she just thinks they are good exercises. Oddly enough, she's not a fan of isolated scale practice--she thinks one should just practice scale-type passages in the pieces one is learning. She's trained in the Russian school (her father studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory), so I guess she knows a thing or two about playing the piano! grin

I do agree with her about practise the scales in the pieces. Practising scales isn't for excercising and strengthening fingers (you can't strengthen the fingers because they don't have muscles). The goal of practising scales to understand the concept of tonality. You will understand it much better if you hear the scale in a musical context in a piece.

I do the same about everything about piano. I practise the whole technique in my pieces : scales, arpeggios, tremolos, trills, octaves, glissandi, polyrhythms, thirds, sixths...

But that brick walls gonna come crashing down. . though not this year methinks.. .

I'm working on three pieces right now.

Minuet in G minor from First Lessons in Bach
A slight little Minuet in C major from Mozart
Toccatina by Kabalevsky: Having fun with this one, though struggling at not looking at my hands when I play. The piece is essentially a single pattern over and over again, but is normally played quite fast. I'm focusing on staying relaxed and not straining my arms and hands. Tough to do when the right hand doesn't really change shape for the entire piece! it's been interesting getting to work with the many accidentals in the second half of the piece.

Today, I am playing Hanon and Czerny Velocity Studies and... it is time to bring out the Nutcracker Suite. Tchaikovsky. So I am excited to see how much progress I have made, if any.

Lately, every time I tune a piano I play a condensed version Claire de Lune by Debussy, followed by Giant Steps by John Coltrane.

They are both in similar keys, use a lot of notes/chords, and have a lot of octaves so I can hear the quality of the stretch, especially the way I play it. I play the Giant Steps melody in octaves, and when I play Debussy, I pause on the octaves, left hand and right hand when they occur.

So......started the morning......playing Haydn. Several parts of Piano Sonatas..... 3hearts.........I love this composer.....

By the way, in the morning my playing is better. Read in publications of neuro-scientists, my son is one of them, that the brain is the best in the morning. It's also my experience thumb

What did you play in the morning?

Best regards,
Johan B

Today, spent a lot of time practicing fiorituras with my eyes closed so that I could concentrate on hearing that each note was clear and even, and as my piano teacher would remind me 'not bumped'.... thumb bumping on delicate passages is something I am working on.

Eyes closed helps me a lot to concentrate on hearing.

Also am spending a lot of time to make trills both even in quality and interesting in pattern...

the devil is in the details and it takes me forever.
