The speakers for my Yamaha YPT-220 are not very good so I have started looking for a small amp to play it through. However I have zero knowledge of amps so I was hoping to get some advice on what to look for. I'll most likely be browsing the local Pawn Shops for a used one so any tips on what names to look for, what problems to watch out for, etc would be appreciated.

Also, I have never used an amplified instrument so what is the sequence for attaching things, turning devices on, and so on in order to avoid making unfortunately loud and painful sounds?

A lack of talent does not stop you from learning piano. It just takes longer and you have to work harder.

The Roland Cube's are interesting.

The amplifier you choose will depend upon ...
- Your use case
- Your intended audience
- Your performing environment
... among other things.

Can you describe your situation?

Agreed. You may need monitors vs. an amp, or perhaps an amp is better, depending on what you're using it for.

Oh, and don't forget to mention budget. This stuff can be pretty costly if you want the quality, but there are some good bargains to be had.

Safe rule to avoid nasty stuff:

. . . Turn on the DP;

. . . . then turn on the amp (if separate from loudspeaker);

. . . . . then turn on the loudspeaker (if it has its own switch).

And for turning off:

. . . Turn off speaker (if it has a switch)

. . . . turn off amp;

. . . . . turn off DP.

FWIW, if you want "live piano" sound volume, you might need around 100 watts of amp power to the speakers. A guy on the Pianoteq forum once gave this rule for adequate bass response:

. . . minimum woofer size: 8" (without subwoofer);

. . . 5" (with subwoofer).

My ZXA1 is (IMHO) perfectly adequate. It's not cheap, but it's clean, well-balanced, and I haven't wished for anything larger. Except once, in a 500-person church -- not quite enough power for that.

You didn't expect this to be cheap -- right? <g>

Basically I just want something that allows me to listen to the keyboard without headphones while I practice. The built in speakers of the keyboard are pretty bad. At the very most, if I ever get confident enough, I might take it to play at a backyard party. I definitely don't have any stage ambitions at this point.

Budget wise I'm stuck at the low end. Let's say under $100 USD.

For under $100 you can:

- Get some computer speakers. They're are not exactly stellar, but they might be better than those in your piano.

or

- Find some used equipment on Ebay or Craigs List.

I got a Yamaha home theater receiver for $32, and a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers for $40 ... all from local sellers. Used is good! The same equipment new would have cost about $350. And much better than computer speakers.
