It's Sunday and I can't get in my studio until tomorrow morning. I have several melodic ideas in mind, but until I'm in my studio I can't produce anything worthwhile.
Once there I'll record (and create the scores) for a few melodies. After that? I can send the easiest one to the first person in line, but about the rest? I'll just keep them around for the next round, etc? Oh, please start with the easiest one, would you I have no idea what to expect. It's one thing to play by ear a melody one knows well, quite another (I imagine) to get a melody line one has never heard before. So please be gentle with us at first. PS: you can get in tomorrow? Tomorrow is a holiday here in Germany (and other northern parts of Europe)... it's 'Pfingsten' (no idea what that would be in English). As I'm not up on all the religious thingies in the various countries, I'm lost on this one.

lol... The way I figure it is that everyone will get a very fair amount of time to listen to this tune. I mean it's not a dictee class where you get to listen to it twice and that's it. You can listen to it 100 times and THEN attempt to play your take on the theme. Unless we provide some kind of time limit that is! But I'll be gentle... don't worry! EDIT: Sure thing. I should be done by 11:00 ish tomorrow morning! ^_^

I liked the original way dire tonic described this, where our individual efforts and struggles along the chain of transmission are private, and all that's posted publicly after it's complete are the beginning and the end.
Regarding competition between groups: no, I would not like that. The pleasure of the game for me is in participating without judgment.

I respect the wish for privacy, and I do see some might be reluctant to take part without it.
If any of us want to figure out where we might have stumbled, no reason we can't PM the person in front of us for clarification of whatever we missed.

CYLE TWO : OPEN FOR SIGN UP
Nikolas - composer
1. 2. 3.Greener 4. 5.dire tonic 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. I was the 11th in the original list, before it was decided to limit it to ten. Does that mean I'm the 11th there, or do I end up in this one?

But I'll be gentle... don't worry! Not sure that type of emoticon bodes well what might come . I see it as a fun thing to do though, who knows it may be completely undoable for me to making a fair stab at it for all I know, bearing in mind different levels of experience. I have no problem to hear all the recording in between at the end, but whatever roles with people I go with. I am easy going on that. Who knows, it may be a line of a rag on the first recording, and end up in a line Chopin by the 10th contestant, I can see the funny side. More to discover and learn by doing this sort of thing I hope, a little bit of an adventure into the unknown and fun all at once. Rather than worry what others may think or compare, lets try and enjoy the ride is my take on it.

Might we get an idea from Nikolas on what his excerpts are going to be like? Are they going to be tonal, diatonic melodies, or is there going to be some avant-garde spice in there?

It seems to be agreed that for this first bash, we keep the intermediate activity private, taking off the strain and listening only to Nikolas's original and the last entry.
We should feel free to start a Q&A on how it worked for each of us, where problems were encountered (bar numbers?) how it can all be streamlined and/or enhanced.
I've had a PM from Polyphonist who would also like to volunteer original melodies, so between him and Nikolas were not going to be short of study material. Let's see if we can devise a way of capitalizing on that without it needing to be too time consuming for coordinators.

Let's see if we can devise a way of capitalizing on that without it needing to be too time consuming for coordinators. It seems to me that the coordinators wouldn't have to do much except arrange people into groups, and we could all collaborate on the organization. The intermediate stages would just involve PMs being passed along between members, which wouldn't require intervention except in the case of somebody running past the deadline, and at the end whoever finishes would just send the original composer their excerpt. The original composer would compile the original recording and the end recording, along with a score, and post them to the forum thread. (I can't speak for Nikolas, but I'd have no problem with doing that.) Also, I suggested using groups of 6 instead of 10 to get faster turn-arounds. How does that sound to people?

We're not far off from 6 for round 2. We could steal a couple from round 1 making it 8 for the first trial and six for the second. Any objections?

- so why not take your pick, PP? Help yourself to two from round 1, add them to round 2 and away you go with round 2.

That sounds good, as long as we don't get any new joiners before we start the exercise. Shall I write the first melody and prepare to send it off? (I'm assuming I would be starting this one since Nikolas won't be ready until tomorrow.)
