Hi,

I am currently looking to upgrade my Kawai GM-12 5'0". My target is a brand new 5'5" to 5'9" under $19k.

I am now down to three choices:
1. Yamaha GC2, 5'8", $18k
2. Baldwin 165, 5'5", $18k
3. Brodmann CE 175, 5'9", $19k

Could you give me opinions on the above three options? I have some hesitations about the quality of the Baldwin and Brodmann as they are made in China. What do you think?

You could get a Kawai GX-1, or maybe even a GX-2 for under 19k couldn't you?

Kawai GX series should be in your price, too. Check them out if you haven't. I envy your decision! You'll enjoy whatever you get at this level. I wish uncorks have afforded a Kawai GX series... alas.

Oops. I was scooped. Sorry, Plowboy. Didn't mean to step on your toes. GX is a gorgeous instrument.

I see you (WingWing) purchased your Kawai 6 years ago. Many dealers offer favorable trade-up options. Is there a reason you that a Kawai GX-1 is not on your list? Do you now prefer a different type of sound?

I think I would also be considering used at that price range, as it would open a lot of options. Regarding the new ones you mentioned:

China Baldwin: I like how they sound and feel on the showroom floor (for their price range), but don't have any way to know how they do over time. Once I see a piano beat up at churches and universities then I know more about the piano. But so far the only place I've seen a China Baldwin is at the dealer.

Broadman: search these forums. There has been considerable discussion here, and I don't have any new information.

Yamaha GC2: I've played some G series pianos that I preferred over the comparable C series (this was before the CX series). From your list, this would be the favorite to beat for me.

Some other pianos to consider: Feurich, Hailun, Kawaii, and Ritmueller.

The price you posted on the Brodmann seems high to me. Pianobuyer has a MSRP of $19,500 and a SMP of $14,000 for the Brodmann CE 175. You should be able to get it for a lot less than $19,000.

I tried the Kawai but I think the sound is mellow for me. I like a brighter sound. So, I like the sound on the Brodmann and Yamaha that I tried at the dealers. I like the Baldwin's touch, it's more controllable, unlike the Brodmann which is a little too light for me. For the Yamaha, I've heard bad comments on the GC series. So, with pros and cons on all 3, now I'm not sure which one I should choose.

Musicpassion suggested that you consider Hailun and Ritmueller. We have a Hailun 178 and we love it. I have heard a lot of good things about Ritmueller, but there is not a dealer in my area for Ritmueller so I have not played Ritmueller. The dealer we purchased from had Brodmann but we preferred the Hailun over the Brodmann.

What counts is to first identify the piano you like best. There's no way around this.

As far as "brand" is concerned they all have their advantages and disadvantages, many times this is being overplayed on this board.

On the balance of things what counts is that you have a piano you will enjoy!
It's really that simple.

Good luck!

I did just get the GE-2, and I love it!

During my search I fell in love with the GX's, but they were way out of my price range. So, I just play the heck out of the GE-2 and enjoy every minute of it! Was a great decision for me as an avid amateur and considering my very small budget! :-)
