My parents have a 5'2" baby grand Stingl from 1926 which has a lovely sound for its size, though the action isn't great now. Was considering having it restored before being tempted by larger, new pianos.

Tried to find out about it and didn't manage much, but apparently the star piano in a well known novel, "The Piano Shop on the West Bank", is a Stingl and is much loved. Haven't read the book, but the reviews online describe it as a "Cinderella of a piano".

Nice part of the world you're from, BTW...

Besbrode Pianos in Leeds, England, has a Stingl Grand for sale for about 8000 Euro. Maybe you could send them an E-mail and get some information?

My parents have now had their Stingl restored and it is to come to live with me. The piano has turned out very much better than I had expected. Aside from the bass, which is, as one would expect from a 5'2" baby grand, a little thin compared to larger grands, the remainder (including the action and the midrange/treble) are very good. Richard Dain, who carried out the restoration, was also pleasantly surprised at the quality of the piano and said it had many construction characteristics similar to Bosendorfers of that age and we considered the possibility of a connection between the firms. He also thought it was interesting that it had hammers of a size more typically found in Concert Grands (if I understood correctly).

I can't find any record of a Stingl-Bösendorfer connection on the web, though the "Marchall Schole Boesendorfer" line on Snow's piano intrigues me. Anyone any ideas? The Austrian and the German in my office say it doesn't mean anything to them.

Anyway, I now have a lovely little baby grand to add to a (worryingly? wink ) growing piano collection....will obviously post pictures on arrival!

I suspect that it is _____ Schule Bösendorfer. I have seen someone advertising a Stingl with a similar marking as a Bösendorfer. It probably means someone worked in the factory for a while, before going off on their own.

Thanks BDB! Nice research. That was my best guess, but it's good to have it confirmed by something concrete. It's fun to get a bit deeper into a piano's history and the origin of its characteristics.

The book "Piano Shop on the Left Bank" is actually a memoir, not a novel, and has quite a bit of piano lore and history in it for those who are interested. The author is especially interested in older pianos, but also includes a trip to the Fazioli factory and interview with the founder/owner.

I finally got round to reading the book after posting in this thread the first time round. It's a nice story, though I wasn't sure how much was real and how much "artistic license".

Most Stingl instruments have vienna actions. In that case it has no real value. We have pretty many of them here in hungary.

I'm not satisfied with Benecs answer. The OP number has to meaning something more about past of piano.
Only that I know is that piano was in 60' imported in former Yugoslavia (today Croatia)from Hungary, but number of production not exist.

Zeljko,
Starting this topic, actually long time ago,was sure would find more about this producer, but unfortunatelly, did not.Gebr. Stingl was sold in thirties of 20 st century and does not exsist any more.
Have seen that in 1912 one of numbers was 24100 so 27000 should be round 1915.
In any ways,if you take the lid of the piano ,first left key will have the year and signature of the master. That is how I discovered my is from 1897.
No too much of details about G.Stingl but what already you could have seen here.
regards

According to the Pierce Piano Atlas Gebruder Stingl, serial number 27496 was manufactured in 1918.

If it helps, in Vienna there still exists a piano store "Gustav Ignaz Stingl", which apparently is somehow related to the former piano manufacturing company.

I talked to a very charming gentleman when I was there and spoke to him about the old "Gebrüder Stingl" upright our men's choir owns, which has an opus number of around 4200. He immediately knew that it must be from around 1890 or so, so I think you might learn something by contacting them. Unfortunately, the website is not exactly up to sniff:

I contact dealer in Vienna, but they told me to contact local dealer in Croatia. Unfortunately, Croatia doesn’t have dealers for Gebruder piano's. What to do next?? Any suggestions?
