I have recently discovered this composer, Adolf von Henselt. I have started playing his Twelve Characteristic Studies Opus 2. His style of writing makes me think of a combination of Chopin and Rachmaninoff. There is an interesting article about him in Wikipedia. He lived a long life but stopped composing at the young age of 33. Does anyone else know about him, or play his music?

Apparently had one of the most paralyzing cases of stage fright. A big influence on Rachmaninoff, which you can hear if you listen to the Concerto.

Yes. From the Wikipedia:
However, despite his relatively long life, Henselt ceased nearly all composition by the age of thirty. The reasons are unclear. Chronic stage fright, bordering on paranoia, caused him to withdraw from concert appearances by age thirty-three.

PS: His Etudes are beautiful.

Whilst not accusing him of being a one piece wonder, nothing i have heard comes close to his piano concerto, which was way ahead of its time and so difficult that most leave it alone.

In my opinion, this is one of his very best compositions for piano solo.

His duo Op. 14 (originally for cello & piano, but also in version for french horn and piano, which is a REALLY good arrangement) is a piece I admire nearly as much as the piano concerto.

I had a teacher who used to assign "Si oiseau j'étais," which used to be about the only Henselt work left in the so-called standard repertoire.

But, I never played it. Those who did seemed to really enjoy it, oddly enough, considering that Henselt is known for tiring stretches and murderous extensions.
