Can someone please post the right hand fingering of the first 4 measures of the third movement (vivace) from the Henle edition of this sonata if they have it. I checked IMSLP but this edition is not there.

Thanks in advance.

132 --- / -32 - / 1-- 3-1 / --1 - /

The - indicates no finger marked. Hope that's clear. smile
Fingering by Conrad Hansen - seems a bit fussy to me.

Thank you currawong, that is just what I needed.

Tovey/Craxton gives:

1--3--/1--3/1--3-1/2---

So the intention is probably:

121343/1213/121341/2323

Makes sense to me, don't know about Henle.

But to begin the first measure with 132 would make the phrasing more difficult, and rather 'fussy' as currawong mentions. Especially considering that the tempo is Vivace, not an Andante sostenuto.

Thank you, I tried the fingering you indicated and it feels very natural and clean. I agree it is better than the Henle for sure. The Alfred edition I have (Maurice Hinson) starts with the 2nd finger and it just doesn't feel right for me.

To finish up the motif, I would think the next four measures would be:

121341/3432/1312(trill)13/4. Is this the fingering in your edition?

Yes, that is correct.

Even if one chooses not to use the Tovey edition for performance, his annotations are invaluable (like Schnabel)... and often mischievously humorous.

Caveat on the Tovey/Craxton edition - they change the phrasing on a lot of the sonatas without saying so. So it's not really very good at being an Urtext edition and follows more some of the English performance traditions established by the 1930s. If you want an ABRSM Edition look for Barry Cooper's new edition. Another good Urtext edition is Schenker (Dover publications), and for a performance edition there is the informative Schnabel edition but it's a bit fussy to get into.

I'll have a look through some of my copies and tell you if there are fingering suggestions.

Schenker: 231 454/ 1324 / 231 231 231 3/

Liszt: 2-- 4 --/ 13-- / 1--3-1/----)

Schnabel 2-2 4-4/1324 / 12-232/342 4/
Schnabel alternative bb3&4 1/232 3/

Frederic Lamond: 2-1 3--/1-- 3 /2-1 3-1/ 3-1 3 /

I quite like Schenker which avoids starting the phrase on the thumb (2 sings a little better for me), but I guess you can do what fits as long as it sounds good.

Thanks Joe80, lots of different fingerings for this phrase. I tried some of them but prefer starting with the thumb. Just seems to flow better for me. Thanks for showing these!
