My son (8yo) is learining to play the piano and I want to buy him an instrument so he can practise at home. Unfortunately our flat is to small to buy an acoustic piano so I'm thinking about buying him a digital one.

I want to find an instrument with a keyboard very similar to an acoustic one.

I read some reviews and checked local music stores and these are the models that I consider:
Roland F20
Kawai CL 26
YAMAHA YDP 142
Kawai KDP90 (a little too expensive)

Could you recommend which one should I choose?

Have you tested out a Casio Privia or Celviano line DP? my wife tried both and she said they were incredible for an entry level dp, if she had to stay under $1,500 thats where she would go, she felt that the yamaha, roland and kawai werent nearly as good untill you got close to the $2,000 mark then they got really nice.

Casio just released a new version of their lowest end privia piano, the PX-160. It's not shipping yet, but should be available soon. For $499 it's an excellent value. Casio used to have a very poor reputation (more as a maker of toys than real instruments) but in recent years they have really stepped up their game. Their privia line is very well regarded here, and I would suggest that it is definitely worth considering.

I own a Casio PX-350. The PX-350 / PX-150 / PX-160 would be fine for any beginning piano student. They are "slab pianos" (portable), rather than "console pianos" (with full cabinet).

You might find a used, or "new old-stock" Yamaha P155. It's a nice digital piano, and it uses a better keyboard mechanism (Yamaha "GH") than the Yamaha YDP-142 (Yamaha "GHS").

Rahvean, those are all fine entry-level instruments that will be suitable for your young son

I would also consider adding the Yamaha P105 and Kawai ES100 to your list, along with the Casio Privia mentioned by others above.

Kind regards,
James
