Hello,

So I'm entirely new to playing the piano, or any instrument for that matter. I found a used Yamaha P105 for $350 with a stand in good condition. Prior to this I was about to pull the trigger on a new Casio Px-350 with guitar center for $615 (plus tax) with their April 15% off deal.

However, truth be told, I don't know how much I will really come to enjoy playing since it is all new. Would picking up the used P105 to start on be a decent buy with the knowledge I can upgrade later (or even keep my eyes posted for a used px-350)?

I know the P105's replacement was just announced, the P115, which has some worthy upgrades over its predecessor. I wonder if this will devalue the P105 significantly in the next few months. My plan would be to sell the P105 for a small loss if I decide to upgrade within the next 6 months.

I used a P105 for about two years (got a refurb PX-5S for $600). I like it and would have kept it except for a deal when I had some extra cash and knew I was going to keep playing. For $350 with Stand that sound like a pretty good deal. I used head phones and was never sorry I bought it. Sound great through the headphones and was very easy to hookup to my computer for my learning program.

I think that is a good price with the stand. If you upgrade the Yamaha to the 115 or 255, the stand should still be good. My main practice instrument is the P-95, and it is adequate. What I understand about the 105 is that they used new and better sampling. Even after 6 months, you may still be happy with it.

That's a good deal, go for it.

Kawai James is right. I have one and am quite happy. Take care of it and you will easily get that back out of it if you sell in the near future...I think you'll wanna keep it though. :-)

$350 is barely worth it, but in this crazy market it's a deal.

As a PX-350 owner:

If you're just starting out in music -- no experience on any instrument, no music-theory knowledge -- the P105 is a good deal.

The PX-350 is considerably more flexible, but that won't do you any good until you know what you want to do with its capabilities. If you need to learn to play piano, it's not much (if any) better than a P105.

I'm inclined to agree with previous comments: If you sell the P105, you won't lose much money on it.
