Hey!

Long time no see smile Is anyone watching preliminaries to upcoming XVII International Chopin Piano Competition as well? This year National Frederic Chopin Institute transmits online on YouTube, if anyone would be interested.

Here's the link to live-stream now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioT6WGjPrJQ

And here's the channel for future and archive performances: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSTXol20Q01Uj-U5Yp3IqFg

Cheers!
Mateusz

Thank you for the link. The official website however seems to be experiencing some really bad technical problems.

Not enjoying any of the performances today. Not really commenting on the quality of the performances. Although I listened to a lot of the last Chopin Competition without getting bored, today I'm feeling like I heard every piece a million times and just can't really listen to another performance(although I am).

I can't say I don't understand you. I have the stream opened in the background, and whereas during last competition I could hardly work during the competition, as I was tempted to listen carefully, today is not the case.

And here's another place to get the live stream if the one at the competition website has problems:

Thank you Mati!!!

What I like about the Chopin, Tchaikovsky, QE competitions is that they are only piano focused.

I really do not understand why some piano competitions have those quartet rounds.

Thanks for the link! I would probably have missed the whole thing otherwise.

But I was getting bored. Only Chopin is just too much if it isn't really good...

I was just about to go to bed, but then the present guy showed up, and his playing is not bad at all smile

I find it somewhat depressing to watch because none of the competitors look like they are enjoying playing. Of course, this is perfectly understandable because the pressure and what's at stake.

I don't know whether she performed but, She Who Shall Not Be Named is on the competitor list.

Let's see how she will do.

I realized that the jury is just in the eyesight of the competitor.
Very distracting.

For some reason I can't find the competitor list. Could you post a link? The website design leaves a lot to be desired.

Some statistics from the competition website about the 160 competitors:

"The group contains a decided preponderance of musicians from the Far East. The Qualification Commission has accepted 26 people from China, 25 from Japan and 24 from South Korea to the Elimination Rounds. The fourth largest group – 21 people – is represented by Poles.

The remaining representatives come from Russia and the United States (11 people each), Great Britain and Italy (5 people each), France (6 people), Canada and Ukraine (4 people each), the Czech Republic and Taiwan (2 people each). The remaining participants are representatives of Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Mongolia, Romania, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland and Uzbekistan"

Who's that then? I don't really know many young pianists so none of these names on the list stand out to me.

It is a completely unfair reference to Fei-Fei Dong, a wonderful young pianist who reached the finals of the Cliburn competition and who in my opinion has a chance to be one of the most interesting and important pianists of the new generation. Some people here (and I suppose elsewhere) thought she was subpar because of some technical issues in her performances at the Cliburn. I thought her musicianship, sensitivity, and personality well eclipsed any such concerns. I was thrilled that the judges apparently saw it as I did and advanced her to the finals -- not just because I felt her to be so worthy but because of how it belies the common stereotype of competitions and judges.

Ah, she seems to be a polarizing one. I remember I loved her playing 5 years ago and I was hoping she would go further back then. I also liked her playing a lot during the Cliburn. However, many of my friends completely do not understand why I like her playing. I'm looking forward to hearing her performance this year as well.

Other pianists who those people might not have thought were real good: grin

Schnabel
Cortot
Rubinstein
.....and maybe even.....
HOROWITZ! (y'know, some wrong notes, some massacred moments, some strange things.....like, what the heck is he doing.....)
