hello guys this is my first post and i want to say thank you for acept my request to this forum.....

im 36 and i just feel the need to do something always want ...play a instrument so i bought a old second hand crapy keyboard piano casio ctk 496 for 40 bucks and 20 for the ac cable ($60) so because no money for a new one .... the sound is realy kind of weird but for the porpuse to learn i think is practical lol anyway i was thinking im old to play or learn to scratch a instrument but today is olmoust my third week and i can say it not imposible but its crazy freaking hard.... i realy want to know if someone with my same age or more start to scratch and a year or four years later is capable to play a clasic song of bethoveen or chopin mozart or just give up? .... btw sorry for my not proper english language my first language is spanish thank you

i forget.... my lesson are a hack learn and master piano dvds and cds (no money to play lessons and youtube is to much and not than organize and in i was thinking start next week with piano marvel... any thougs?

Everyone is different so there is no real way to answer "when will I be able to play such and such a piece". However although the journey can be tough at times there is no reason why you cannot learn satisfying pieces right from the start. There is a huge amount of material in the classical catalogue for pianists at every step of the journey and even Beethoven wrote some fairly easy pieces although Chopin less so.

I started piano 2.5 years ago at 54 and can play some Beethoven and Chopin but the more ambitious pieces by those composers are still years away (if ever). The main thing is to be happy with what you can play today.

If you did not know about it already you should look here for free classical sheet music.

You should also look here to find the grading/difficulty of pieces.

I would say ... go ahead and do what you are planning.

AND ... start saving your money regularly (a little at a time) until you have at least 500 dollars and then get yourself a nice instrument which will allow you to enjoy your playing much more.

But, for now ... have fun with what you have.

Hi! I'm pretty much in the same boat. A cheap 61 key Yamaha set up in a back room. Still it is enough to get started on. For basic technique and music knowledge I'd suggest the Alfred's All in One Course Book 1. At $15 it is within most means and it is getting me started at least. Plus you can get plenty of help here from a thread that is dedicated to that series. Good Luck!

Hi DigitalC, I was just started my piano lesson one month ago also. I have bought myself a digital piano too, but was thinking to change to upright after one year or two...the sound are really different between digital and real piano. But for start, I think digital piano should be sufficient to me.

in 2.5 years you can play some of Chopin and Beethoven wow that bring me HOPE.... thank you so much for share your experience with me

one of my goals save money to buy some decent but first start with my crapy one and if i give up i dont lose money or just 60 bucks and for now i realy like it but read music lol HARD to learn for me but i know just matter of time and thank you

i was so down because i saw a lot of people with amazing real pianos posting here so i feel shame of my post i almost delete but now i feel better cuz i know i am not just the only one using a crapy key thank you for being a briliant tool with your words to my journey

And I have a teacher, and a decent digital piano, and about 8 years of piano study when I was young. I'm making up for 40 years of "no practice".

Stick with it -- progress is very slow, but there _is_ progress.

I'm 53 and just got my digital piano this week ($150 from Guitar Center). I have Alfred's Vol 1 plus a load of other stuff downloaded from the web. I play guitar as well but really wanted to play piano and am addicted already.

You are never too old to try and do what you want to. You may never be a concert pianist (but never say never), but you will be able to create music and enjoy the sounds coming from your instrument. At 36 you are nearly twenty years before my time and I can only dream of what I could have achieved musically in that time

You are a mere 'kid' compared to me and a lot of others in this forum It's never too late.

I, as many others, started out on a keyboard just like yours, except it was a Yamaha. You can learn a lot on that while you save up for something larger.

Good luck, and remember, there is lots of good advice to be had around here.

PS, you are doing just fine with your English.

I say go for it. Get the best set of keys you can afford and just go for it. You may find that music takes a priority. I for one completely exited one of my other long time hobbies to focus on piano.

Welcome to the wonderful world of piano. Frustrating, enchanting, exhausting, and probably addicting for many of us. Enjoy the ride. We all start somewhere and on some instrument...good advice to save for the best piano you can afford. On this forum there are people with teachers, with DVDs, with the Internet, with piano books, with a good ear or some combination. Many of us prefer the expertise of a teacher as guide. This forum is a place for conversation about piano..I mean where else can you really talk about this in detail? Good people and inspiring to hear the experiences of others.

Don't worry about the instrument you do have. I have a digital 49 key keyboard (Yamaha PSR-160) I got at a thrift store last October. Working on saving up for something I can use for classical as well as for my own music. We all start somewhere.

Learning to read music is difficult so don't be afraid to ask questions if you get stuck on something. There are plenty of wonderful easy pieces out there to get you started.

Welcome and this is really a great place to learn.. I read the post and get inspired. I just started 3 month ago and one same theme is get from everyone is to take your time and enjoy the journey. So I have lost that crazy urge to learn everything really fast. I have a digital that I put stickers on and learn on and we have a upright... and I know 3 or 4 years from now I will be where I want to be.. enjoy and welcome.. some very nice people here.

Es cierto que es dificil aprender el piano, especialmente por los adultos que no antes han tocado un instrumento, pero es sin duda posible. Si quieres tocar las clasicas de compuestadores, no lo abandones! Hay obras de Beethoven y Mozart y Chopin y otras que son mas faciles que parecen. Recomiendo que pruebes Chopin Op. 28 No. 4 y Op. 28 No. 20.

Es bueno que tengas teclado, y lo tuyo es suficiente por ahora.

Welcome! And a cheap keyboard is better than no keyboard. If you can live with the sound, you can still understand some piano theory and get a sense of what the keys sound like. The only thing you would really be lacking is the pianistic feel to the keys. Hopefully you can upgrade as you get better, a reward to yourself. Entry level keyboards have really come down in price recently. And there's always thrift stores and Craigslist. But something is always better than nothing.
