It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
In a Tv-show on Dutch television, 'De tiende van Tijl, Valentina Toth, dutch pianist, played the theme of the Enigma viariations of Edward Elgar. My wife looked up from her reading and said, 'Hm......sad music'........
After the show I went to my study, found the score at IMSLP, and played the theme and two variations; mmmm...nice music.... played for about som 15 minutes.........then my wife entered my study.......shouting...'Can't you stop playing this depressing music?'.......'When you are not sad you'll be depressed'........I talked with her about the nice bas-melody etc.....but no result.......
So when I want to tease my wife.........Enigma variations.....
Don't worry...we love each other......

I have a CD of someone covering all of the enigma variations on piano. It's played well, but to me the music is just odd on piano. I've never actually heard it performed by an orchestra.

Odd?....why...I think it's a matter of using the right dynamic. Btw, I also never heard by orchestra......

Let me put that right, as I hear it all the time here in England.....
How I love that piece! I have heard the LSO play it many times, usually as an encore. I always find it deeply moving. I found a simple piano arrangement and learned to play it, but it is just not the same thing on piano, for me.
The orchestral arrangement of "Nimrod" varies from orch to orch! Some are so expressive. The best I heard was from an E European outfit who really let those trombones fly at the end!
The first tune in Enigma Variations is truly depressive at the start, and reminds me of the opening to Handel`s Messiah . . .but it perks up well. And the trombones are in evidence . .

I have actually thought about measuring the tempos and relative loudness of various recordings to try to understand why I respond differently to different recordings, but I never got around to it. Sometimes they start so softly that there is a period of uncertainty at the beginning when I am not sure whether or not they have begun!

As far as I can ascertain, the beauty of this (and other orchestral music at times) is the fact that French Horns, English horns/oboes and Trombones etc can overwhelm the generally accepted melody line, from underneath (sneaky, like), which wouldn`t happen on the piano, because the volume of the associated (held) notes has subsided and . . one has only ten fingers which unfortunately, have to remain attached to the hand (French Shrug).
Could do wi a couple of full stops in there somewhere . . .
