Well, it had to happen. and quite well thought out. an interesting read.

Yes, an iPad drives it. Yes, it is a digital signal. And yes, down deep, it is a Steinway.

Got a $110,000 ???

Sorry, but what's the difference between this and player piano installed or PianoDisc? Seems like nothing new for me.

Same here. Nothing new in the horizon; besides, it seems like it's simply a player piano.

There's no mention of silent-play capabilities.

Most Disklavier pianos can play themselves, and even render Glenn Gould's performance of the Goldbergs.

So, what's new, Steinway? Anything interesting/not-snobbish to show?

I think it will make all the rich people who own a Steinway for show selling their current models for this new system. I'd love one if I was stinking rich.

Right - Not a digital piano at all - not even close. Just an acoustic with a player system. Probably want to have this moved to the acoustic forum.

Not digital ...

But it does record and playback from an iPad. Kinda Digital.

Also, from the article, a piano concert can be streamed live to the iPad and played real time in your living room. Neat.

Nice, but if I had that kind of money I rather have a Bosendorfer CEUS:

Ironically... perhaps, the software backbone of all these player systems is the dreaded MIDI technology...

The possibilities are interesting. You do a high end recording at the Steinway, but with SUPER-EDITING, because of course you have access to the midi file record of your performance. Instead of those tedious audio splices, just get it perfect with an adjustment to the midi file. Then "turn on" the player, and re-record with the Neumanns... I mean if you can afford the piano, you can afford the mics.

Hey, you can even "play" an exact copy of your original recording over and over, moving the Neumanns around until you get.. well ... sonic perfection, in addition to your already perfect midi-corrected performance!!!

Perhaps the marketing folks figured... hey, if you play it with your fingers, it's digital.
