Hey everybody, The Chicago Tribune ran an article today on improved piano sales in 2014. In the Tribune's paper version it's literally front page news. Here's a link to the on-line version of the article for your clicking enjoyment: Piano industry revives as housing market recovers
I'd be interested in hearing comments. Larry.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Probably now that the economy has been stable for the past several years, more people have moved out of survival & defense mode, constantly guessing what's going to cause the next crash, and are starting to have fun again, find creative outlets, moving up Maslow's pyramid of human needs. Let's hope it continues.

It's a joke, Philip. Here is a diagram of American psychologist Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs back in the 40s (obviously before the invention of the internet): Larry.

Apparently the Chicago Tribune itself exists somewhere in the red or orange portion of the Maslow chart. They won't let me read the article, just loop back and forth through login screens and "subscribe" screens. Anybody have an "unlocked" link to this article?

I was able to read the article if I searched google news with "Piano industry revives" or something like that.

I think it's essentially a puff piece. They point out that the piano's best year for sales was '09. And that's not 2009, but 1909! More than 100 years ago! Unfortunately, the piano simply doesn't occupy the same place in the American lifestyle that it once did. It's a seismic shift in Western values. I think what they're calling revival may simply be sales bottoming out and stabilizing. In that best year, the US population was 92 million. In 2010 it was 309 million, more than tripled, and yet only one-tenth the number of pianos were sold. Read more about it here: What happened in 1980?
