The 2015 NAMM show is over, and we've dug out from the blizzard (here in Maine), time for some follow up.

First, some videos we shot during the show, mostly of incredible piano players... This is from a NAMM playlist I created on YouTube.
Individual clips are shown below this one.

If you attended the show please feel free to add to this thread, we'd love to hear your thoughts and see your pictures/videos.

And Now for Some Individual Videos!...

After all these years, I finally get to meet Keith Emerson in Person!

Christian Bluthner explained to us all the research they did to create this cabinet. While others have had issues with fading and yellowing, the Bluthner has no such issues. One of their consultants was a maker of petri dishes. Kathy said that makes this Bluthner a real part of the "Piano Culture" :-)

I would be remiss if I didn't follow up with some observations.

The piano section of the show keeps getting smaller, most unfortunate.
Even the companies who usually rented huge spaces have cut back substantially.

And as one might expect, the new companies were primarily from Asia.

As much as it bothered me to see our (pianos/digitals) shrinking, it bothered me more to hear people in the business talking about the decline of the piano in the U.S.

And who's fault do you think that is? !! For many of you, it's just a matter of looking in the mirror.
What exactly have you done to try to improve the situation?

Let's think about this for a moment. The Chinese and Indian markets are growing exponentially. Children in China and India are often expected to study piano and/or violin. That's right EXPECTED.
And so their markets are growing at a rate we can only with for. But wishing isn't going to cut it.

The U.S. population continues to grow.
In 1910 the census shows 92,228,446 people living in the U.S., in 2010 it was 308,745,538!
That's an increase of 216,517,000. Got that? 216 MILLION more potential piano players.

Do you know how many pianos we sold in 1910?
Approximately 365,000
And in 2010?
Approximately 61,000 - and that included Digital pianos!

Break it down, in 1910 we sold a piano to 1 out of 253 people in the U.S.
In 2010, in spite of a huge increase in population, we dropped to selling a piano (acoustic or digital) to 1 out 3,549 people.

Shame on us.

And please don't give me the song and dance about how much harder it is to sell pianos and keyboard now.
What with all the competition from electronics, computers, iPads, the Internet, etc.

Do you think they have any less competition from these things in China or India?

It is our job to educate parents on the importance of their children learning to play an instrument.
And we should go back to offering free introductory lessons, visiting schools, putting on concerts, and..

In other words, everything we possibly can be doing we should be doing to turn this industry back around.

I maintain that Piano World is a good example of the interest that is still out there, an interest we should be encouraging and nurturing. Last year nearly 6 MILLION unique visitors came to Piano World because they were interested in the piano.

Kathy and I belong to an all volunteer non-profit called the Saco River Festival Association (www.SacoRiverFestival.org), a group dedicated to getting kids excited about music, and bringing free concerts to the local area. Kathy and I also perform at parties, church's, and other venues doing our little part to spread the joys of live music. We always encourage people to get involved and learn to play.

And of course we try to reach out through Piano World every chance we get, and thanks to our members and guests we reach a pretty big audience. But all our efforts are still a drop in the bucket. We need ALL of you doing your part.

What are you doing to get new people interested in playing?
If you are a dealer, what are you doing at your store to get people excited about playing? How are you making it easy for them? What are you doing to reach out to them?

I truly believe the piano/keyboard market in the U.S. is far from dead, but it could sure use some help.

This is a good question and I'm sure there a good number of them who are doing things already. Staging concerts and recitals is one thing but then again it usually seems to attract the crowd that's already in music.

Invent another Elton John?

Not bad idea...

The other aspect I often resent is how much music has become a "business" Selling certainly is but so are lessons, competitions and all kinds of music events.

I was lucky having grown up in a culture where music was exactly that: 'a culture' or at least 'part of it'

To me that's where things are at. Unless we make it a self-driven, self motivated part of our normal life, it will never be the same.

Which is exactly what I'm doing at this particular stage of my own life. I know Frank *does*....

Playing music - and enjoying it!!

I usually take a ton of pictures. I thought I took more than I have. The ones I have aren't really piano stuff, so I wont bother.

Nice pics, thanks!

>What exactly have you done to try to improve the situation?

* Bought a pretty big grand even though I'm living in an appartment
* work hard to make it sound decent.
* post the results in the ABF so people may get inspired

But this is not going to change anything. The decline is already there since the '70s. For a number of much bigger reasons than uneducated parents.

Gosh Frank, where's the melody in all those clips in your first post. Even Kevin plays the pieces so slowly and with so many extra notes, it is really hard to hear the melody well enough to recognize what it is he is playing.

Maybe that is why people are not much interested in piano, as the examples of truly beautiful music are thinned out by the jazz, which I like to compare to high level practice and just showing off one's chops, modern dissonant music (think Bartok & Prokofiev), then we can add in the reggae (they all sound alike), and rap, where the last thing one needs is a piano. Maybe young people need to hear more of the old standards, after all that is why they are standards, because they are beautiful to the most number of people.

Well, for me, it is 'Give me melody or give me silence'.

To be fair to the first poster, each person's hearing acuity and interpretation of what they hear is different.

I think we can disagree on what another person hears in a piece, but at the same time not mock them...

I'd like to hear more about your meeting with Keith Emerson. How did it come about, what did he have to say (and what did you say to him), how is his hand doing after that horrible injury? Is he still able to play now? Probably not the punishment of touring, but how about composition and recording? Does he still sing?

Maybe a year back, I was browsing the catalog of Barnes and Noble, or Amazon, and I found out that most of his recordings are still in release, able to be purchased. It must be a good 40 years sing "Emerson, Lake and Palmer," "Pictures at an Exhibition,"and "Tarkus" were released, but they're still selling.
