A very technially brilliant performance. Your fingers move like the wind. Now I would suggest you involve your whole body in the performance. See if you can find a performance by Lang Lang on You Tube. Yes ... he IS outrageous ... but there's no doubt about his feelings and his music reflects that. Then lock yourelf in a studio, close your eyes and let go. Move and exaggerate those motions ... make a parody of Lang Lang.
And then see what happens. Music is hands AND body. And somehow there is a magic which occurs when you allow the body to participate. Of course you may never want the extreme gyrations of Lang Lang ... but they can be a doorway to wonderfully expressive playing.
Years ago I was in India attending a rigorous ten day course in meditation and awareness. At one point over 100 of us assembled at 6 in the morning to "dance". We stood on a huge marble circle in the middle of a jungle area .. and it was pitch dark. The music began and we were told to dance. Well we stumbled around, looking at each other and comparing and generally being awkward. Then she gave each of us a scarf and told us to blindfold ourselves. We did. And the music continued ... and changed subtly from a popular style to a flowing and dreamlike melody. Time passed. Ten minutes .... more .... then the instructor came behind me and whispered .
."Relax ... forget about yourelf ... think of the music ... just the music. It's you body and the music. You are gone ... just the music and motion." She rotated my shoulders gently and moved on. We danced.
Another ten minutes ... still blindfolded. And then it happened and I
became the music and motion. I could feel myself floating and my arms like wings. I wondered briefly if I would bump into someone else since I was still blindfolded. But I didn't care. I danced. I rotated and dipped and soared. And then a soft command close to me.
"Remove your blindfold and keep youir eyes shut." I did. Aware that there was light behind my eyelids. I kept dancing. Then she said .."Open your eyes". I did.
The sun had come up ... and 100 people had moved away making a circle for me ... and I was dancing in the middle of that circle ... dancing as I could never have imagined was possible. For some reason the instructor had chosen me ... probably because I was so awkward ... and decided I would be the example for the class.
It was like a magic spell ... Today I can still dance ... improvise at the sound of a note.
When I first saw Lang Lang ... I realized that somewhere along the line he too had been jolted into pure awareness. But he decided to "go commercial" ... I just teach ...
