We want to invest about $10,000 in a piano. Could do maybe up to $15,000 if there was a significant benefit in the extra money. What piano would you buy with this range of money? Only requirement is it must be an upright.

Its enough to get a decent instrument. Enjoy your shopping experience and please let us know how you are making out.

I'm guessing that's 10,000 American dollars? What part of the country are you in and what's available there?

Welcome to the Forum.

I think your question might be a little misdirected for three reasons:
1) the piano market varies widely from one region to another
2) important characteristics of piano sound and touch vary from individual to individual, so much so that there might be little consensus, and
3) not all makes of piano are necessarily available in all regions.

That said, $10,000.00 to $15,000.00 will certainly get you a good upright.

I suggest that you try as many pianos as you can get your hands on within comfortable traveling distance, learn what qualities of sound and touch appeal most to you, and then see what pianos with those qualities are available within your budget.

Also read as much as you can (particularly in the "Piano Buyer" - available online through the ad for it in the left margin) - so you'll eventually be informed about what to expect when you go piano shopping.

Regards,

BruceD

If finding right dealer, it could get you already a pretty nice grand!

That may be true, except that the OP stated that his piano must be an upright.

You have many types of pianos to consider in that price range. One option, which I would probably lean towards, is a used high end upright, around 10 years old (such as a Seiler or maybe Sauter). Depending on where you are located there might not be any of these nearby.

Another option would be a new piano. Kawai, Yamaha, Charles Walter, and perhaps some of the very high end Chinese pianos would be options to consider in this category.

Another option would be a rebuilt vintage piano (from 1920 or something). These can be really magnificent, but everything depends on the skill of the shop that did the restoration. We've often talked about rebuilding on the forum, and I think only a somewhat small percentage of rebuilds are done to a high artistic level. But they are out there, so I'd suggest don't cross this option off the list. A brand new rebuild would probably be out of your price range, but one done within 10 years and well cared for should fall right in your range (depending on your region).

If you are comfortable identifying your general area, some here might be able to provide more detailed information.

Welcome to the forum and happy shopping.

I'd buy another of what I've got already: a Charles Walter in Queen Anne Mahogany.

Interesting to observe a lack of suggestions regarding European instruments in that price range.

I did mention used a Seiler or Sauter in my post, which could be a good option, but they might not be able to find anything like this.

IMHO the only way to give some kind of useful answer - and I'm talking "new" piano - is to be as informed as possible on a strictly price-comparative basis. Play a number of pianos, compare their specs and prices. Evaluate the business you're buying from, it's reputation, established service standards, etc. Identify your own likes and preferences.

Right now there a case here on the board where some bought a good piano in Italy only to get cheated by the dealer later.

Summary: look at everything as much as can - then draw your own conclusion.

Good luck!

Norbert smile
