I'm thinking to buy a fully refurbished W. Knabe baby grand (serial # 180097) manufactured in the US in 1970 or 71. The negotiated price tag is $4750. The owner claims it's in excellent working condition. The reason for refurbishing was:
1) piano was exposed to salt and ocean winds that caused deterioration of the metal parts;
2) the piano spent some time in a storage and had developed mold from being packed for so long in a humid environment.
When mold and metal corrosion was found, the insurance of the movers had to pay $11K for full refurbishment, restoring the piano to its former beauty.
My questions are: is it worth to buy a piano with such history? And is it possible to get read of the mold and fully restore the ruined instrument?
Thanks! I

I think your best bet to insure your money is well spent is to have an independent technician examine the piano thoroughly and give you his report on its condition.

No one can tell you whether this would be a worthwhile purchase except a technician who has examined the instrument.

I agree with Bruce - no one can know without looking at the instrument.

However I have one concern to mention: $11,000 seems rather cheap for any major work on a piano.

That salt air can rot the wood of the bridge when the strings rust where they touch the wood. This can also happen to the pin-block when the tuning pins rust. New pin-block and bridge caps are not cheap. Also very few technicians can do this work well.

Find out what they did for the $11K, and in particular what they did about the mold. Ask for a copy of the rebuilder's invoice.

Two thoughts. I'd like to know your opinion.
1. If someone rebuild the whole thing, then it's not the coveted Knabe anymore, right? It is a work of Mr. Danny Benjoseph from Florida-based Pianos and Beyond, who could be very skilled, or not, but they're not the Knabe!
2. Is 1971 Knabe even deserve to be coveted?
musicpassion, I appreciate your input in my other post regarding the Knabe. Maybe anyone else could add something?

I wouldn't buy a Knabe unless it was pre 1920.. now if you meant an 1870...that's more like it..

"Can reburbishing eliminate mold?" I would say no. A dry environment can help keep it from re-establishing. Mold spores are probably hiding deep inside every nook and cranny of the rebuilt piano. There are lots of articles on line about "getting rid" of mold or controlling it.

Good Luck with you piano search.

Learning to play the piano, very happy with my 1907 Ivers Pond uprights, and ready to part with my Yamha C7 - not the sound I like.

I had a 1902 Knabe that wasn't worth fixing because of the old fashioned pin block and action designs. The cutoff should be 1930, when Aeolian bought them out, not 1920.

How about fumigation with Vikane? It kills dry rot fungus. I'd expect it to nail most other fungi and molds.
