For the heck of it I looked up someone whose name was stuck in my mind, who was mentioned by Raymond Lewenthal in a talk that was included with one of his Henselt LP's, someone named Nikolai Zverev. I didn't remember his connection to Henselt but I easily saw when I looked him up that it was that he studied with Henselt. Anyway.....I didn't come on here to say that. The thing is, I found this photo of Zverev with a bunch of his students. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.concertzender.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Zveref_and_students.jpg) (Zverev is the adult.) A couple of the kids are people that almost everyone here knows. Can you identify them? I sure would never have known. Maybe, maybe I might have guessed one of them, but probably not. And by the way, if you do know them, if possible please don't say them for a while, except maybe as a concealed spoiler.... like this If you feel like it you could probably find out right away who's in the pic by dropping it into Google Images or something like that. But that's sort of cheating. You can also tell by doing what I did -- looking up Nikolai Zverev. This pic will usually show up with a full caption. That's cheating too.

Could only recognize the obvious one!
And I did cheat to see the other names. Only recognized one other by name. Probably wouldn't recognize him as an adult either!
Interesting reading on wiki though about how much Z gave to his students.
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything."

Interesting how the 'six-and-a-half-foot scowl' was already present even at such a tender age, long before he was 6 1/2 ft and when he was still capable of smiling......

The youth standing behind Zverev on his near left (i.e., near right as you're looking at it) looks like a young Rachmaninov, and the youth sitting on his near left looks like a young Prokofiev -- is that correct?

Here is a description of what it was like to study with Sverev:
I entered Zverev’s home with a heavy heart and foreboding, having heard tell of his severity and ‘heavy hand’, which he had no qualms of resorting to. Indeed, we were able to witness proof of this latter: Zverev had a temper, and could launch himself at a person fists flailing, or hurl some object at the offender. I myself had been the object of his fury on three or four occasions…
But all other talk of his exacting and severe manner were false. This was a man of rare intellect, generosity and kindness. He commanded a great deal of respect among the best people of his time.
Indeed, discipline entered my life. God forbid that I leave the piano five minutes before my time of three hours was up! Or one uncompleted note – such cases were capable of stirring him up into a fearsome temper. However, all our achievements and diligence paid off: he drove us, his pupils, to various houses with concerts. When I finished playing, Zverev said: “Now that is how one should play the piano!”
The impression was that he was quite mad about us, his pupils. He never took a single coin from us as payment: neither for lessons, nor for board (after all, we lived in his house). He dressed us at the best tailors, we never missed a premiere at Moscow theatres – musical or drama. Of course, no really good concert went unnoticed. And that was a time when there was so much on offer: take the famous historical concerts of Anton Rubinstein, where we had an opportunity to hear all that was the greatest!
Zverev never limited himself to bringing us up as pianists. He did his best to generally give us a good all-round upbringing. He was deeply interested in the kind of reading we did

Hey, I said not to give it away too fast! You're darn right that it looks like a young Prokofiev! Great get!! But..... It's not him. About that other guy that you said: One of the people I was talking about, the one I never would have come close to guessing, nobody else has either, I mean not without 'cheating.' I think it would be basically impossible to guess him, except maybe for this lady named Viviana who's a fortepianist and does all kinds of great stuff, but 'fortunately' I think she doesn't look at this site and so she's not gonna be helping anybody out! (Hey Viviana, if you happen to be looking..... Actually I'm her 'friend' on Facebook. I might post this pic on her page and see what happens.)

My guess would be Rach(standing) Rimsky-Korsakov(sitting on right) so now i'm leaning to the Russian Five and that could be Tchaikovsky, sitting on the left, but not sure.

Well, then -- my alternative (which I was going to post before, but didn't) was Alexander Scriabin, standing on the far left (far right as you look at it). Correct?

Most of the students are far too young to be able to do more than wild guessing because they look little like the adult pictures we're used to seeing. Even with the list of his famous pupils I have little idea except for Rachmaninov because of his height.

That's obviously Pressman sitting on the far right.

Hi all,
Mark_C: This is one of my all-time favorite photographs but I've refrained from commenting because, well, you know. I do think your clue comes dangerously close to spilling the beans, though.

.....Boy, was I wrong.... But this time you're right! Well, then -- my alternative (which I was going to post before, but didn't) was Alexander Scriabin, standing on the far left (far right as you look at it). Correct? Partial credit! (to be continued.....) BTW, you're doing great. Actually your answer almost seems better to me than the real one! Most of the students are far too young to be able to do more than wild guessing because they look little like the adult pictures we're used to seeing. Even with the list of his famous pupils I have little idea except for Rachmaninov because of his height. I didn't even notice that he was particularly tall on there! They all seem sort of 'regular size' to me. That's obviously Pressman sitting on the far right. Yeah sure. ....This is one of my all-time favorite photographs but I've refrained from commenting because, well, you know. I do think your clue comes dangerously close to spilling the beans, though. Cool -- you knew this photo! I'm surprised it's not more famous than it seems to be. It's a delight.

Well, I also tracked it down - from left to right:
Samuelson, Scriabin, Maximov, The Z Man, Rachmaninoff, Chernayev, Keneman, Pressman
Hope I didn't ruin anybody's day...
Loved the pic - any way you can plant this on the Classical Music Guide (CMG)..??
