Marty always had a witty quip, often a pun, for any new entry in the "Funny Craigslist Piano Listings".

Internet forums are a funny thing and I participate in several: People living all over the world that share a common interest, and you know you will probably never meet the people you exchange with. You make up your own idea of what they are like based almost solely on their writing style. It is when you hear sad news like this that it all comes down to earth, that these are real people with families, etc that have lives much outside the scope of the forum. He will be missed.

Someone requested that we make the memorial thread for Marty a sticky thread for a while, in his memory... I asked Frank Baxter for his permission to do that and he granted it. So, Marty, in your memory, here is your very own Piano World sticky thread! Rick

I'm so sorry. Let me add my name to the long list of mourners on this website.
Rich, is there any way we on the forum can send a joint token or message of condolence to Marty's family and friends?

Minnesota Marty
Marty was a widely-traveled performing classical pianist and was engaged in a large amount of master class teaching as well. In latter years he cut back on these activities and most of his performances were largely limited to Eastern Europe and Scandinavia where he remained quite popular.
He came from a musical background. His mother was a staff pianist at famous radio station ca. 1930-50s where she was part of a team that would broadcast live from the studio often "testing" the response to new "songs" before publication. When there was good response from the musicians or the radio audience, these compositions would be picked up for publication by Schirmer or Lyon & Healy.
Marty was a graduate of UW-Madison.
Though his "sanctuary" was in Minnesota, Marty's primary residence was in *** where he remained active in the area.

I enjoyed his posts, and, in fact, his ranting and raving some time back led me to purchase a Jansen bench, with leather!!!! It arrived today, and I had wanted him to know about it and how he had influenced me.
One thing is for sure, the man LIVED right up till the end. I know too many that died years before their hearts stopped beating.
Bill, if you are reading this, I'm sorry for your loss.
Forrest

I'm saddened whenever we lose one of our own, maybe a little more so when it's a colorful character like Marty. My condolences to his friends and family. MM and I exchanged our fair share of emails and PMs over the years, I'd always hoped to have a chance to meet him in person. He actually started on the forums as Marty in Minnesota (which he alluded to in his last post), here is his first post from 2007 http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/611097/Thunk_-_GRRR.html#Post611097And this would be his last post, one which I now wish I had seen sooner, as I would have gotten to say goodbye before he departed for a bigger stage http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2333023/How_Odd.html#Post2333023He will be missed, but at least his memory will live on in his posts on the Piano Forums (all 8617 of them between the two accounts). - Frank B. Thank you Rich, Bob, and Frank, for providing this information for us.
And thank you Marty, for being you.
Getting to know Marty here made me feel as though I had found a kindred spirit, though he would be someone I would look up to. His perspective on everything seemed upbeat, and he never seemed to let anything bad get under his skin. I had high hopes of getting to meet him in person someday and buy him a recreational beverage or seven at the Shout House. If this isn't an affirmation of carpe diem, I don't know what would be.
Rest in peace eternal, dear friend.

I've been somewhat reluctant to post here, because I've already posted my feelings quite a bit in Marty's last couple of threads. I'm glad I had a chance to do so, but I'm glad I also had a chance to tell him how much I appreciated his participation here before we even knew he was departing. I say that not as an achievement, per se, but just dumb luck on my part. But, there are some things still to be said. Words are never sufficient, at times like this, but there's no other way to try to share our feelings. First of all, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to Bill. It takes a special kind of person to stand by someone until the bitter end, especially knowing that the next step means going it "alone." I quote "alone" because I'm sure that you have family and friends, but no longer the one significant person with whom you've made a life, and shared the kind of bond that isn't severed even by death. True love never dies--death only means separation, at least for a time... I'd also like to express my sympathy to Marty and Bill's network of family and friends, whomever and wherever they may be. We feel Marty's loss here, in an online "virtual" world. I can't imagine what it must be like to lose him in the "real" world. I never met Marty in person, and I envy those who have. Like Frank, I've poked around in some of Marty's older posts in the last few days. I enjoyed that first one--it showed Marty arriving here the way so many of us do: with a little bit of trepidation, confessing to have read quite a bit, and jumping in with a question. I have to give him credit though, in true Marty fashion, he jumped right into the Tuners & Technicians forum (I don't think I've ever posted there)! I also enjoyed his In Memoriam post about his mother. It provided a little insight into his background. And bkw58's post above fleshed that out a little more. I also enjoyed reading above that he was a "widely-traveled performing classical pianist and was engaged in a large amount of master class teaching as well," and that he remained quite popular. Those were things I never knew. I had no doubt about his abilities and accomplishments...I just didn't know what they were. While some might laud their own accomplishments, as best I could tell, Marty never did. He just shared his wisdom and passion for the piano. Maybe a better way to sum this up, in my mind, is that Marty possessed a sort of humility that I wasn't previously aware of. And for that, I respect him all the more.

While I sincerely appreciate the posts and links provided by bkw58 and Retsacnal, we are still very much in the dark about Marty's true identity.

I kind of get the feeling that those who know this information would prefer to keep it private for whatever reason.

His family should really be the ones to decide whether or not his name is revealed to Internet forum members. It may take them a while to decide on that.
After all, most of us are "friends" that his family probably didn't know he had.
