I have a Baldwin PS2500 with a dead RAM battery (will not recharge). Is this a battery that I could replace myself? Everything works fine except the RAM storage. My search of the internet hasn't produce much useful information. It is mostly just an inconvenience but, I would like for it to work properly.

The Baldwin Pianovelle PS2500 was manufactured by Generalmusic SpA, an Italian OEM instrument maker which also marketed the PS2500 under its own GEM product line back in the late 1990’s. Generalmusic went out of business in 2009, while Baldwin Pianos declared bankruptcy and was purchased by Gibson Guitars in 2001 and no longer sells digital pianos and has since moved its acoustic piano manufacturing operations to China. Given the age of the PS2500 and status of the vendors, there is no vendor support or parts availability for this model.

I did locate a service manual for the PS2500 at the following link:

The service manual (ref. page 20) indicates the PS2500 included a 4.8v 280 mah rechargeable Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) backup battery which is mounted on the Power Amplifier & Supply board (ref. pages 8 and 9). This battery is apparently a small 4-cell battery pack (4V8 NiCd) which is soldered directly to the board. It should be relatively easy for a hobbyist or technician to desolder the battery pack and install a replacement if one can be located. I saw some references on the internet to using a 4XN280BC battery pack as a replacement but that battery pack appears to be no longer available. Another alternative might be to mount a 4 x AAA battery holder with 4 single cell 1.2v AAA NiCd batteries in the PS2500 and solder the wires from the holder to the board. See http://www.batteryspace.com/ for a possible NiCd source.

NiCd is an old and now largely obsolete battery technology. NiCd rechargeable batteries were included in many digital pianos back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s, only to discover 10-15 years later that they were leaking and damaging the circuit boards. There are several PianoWorld threads on repairing such damage. The backup battery on the PS2500 is not essential to operation and this does not need to be replaced; however, it might be worthwhile opening the PS2500 to inspect the condition of the battery on the Power Amplified & Supply board. According to the service manual (ref. page 2), to open the PS2500, four screws on the back of the PS2500 need to be removed and then simply slide the top cover forward to expose the circuit boards.

I also located an old list of authorized Generalmusic service centers (circa 2005) which includes several in Ohio.
