This is the first piece I've heard from this composer. Initially I thought it might have been Chopin, certain passages and phrases almost sounding like snippets from his pieces. It sounds like nice music, and certainly well written, but seems to lack a sense of soul or having a "purpose".

Thoughts?

For a long time, the only music by Arensky I ever heard was his Piano Trio No.1 in D minor, which is actually fairly frequently performed (more so than Rachmaninov's piano trios).

His music is Tchaikovskian, but without quite that master's melodic gifts, and I think he's at his best in chamber music - including his Suites for 2 pianos, which I find more appealing than his solo piano works.

Try this: http://youtu.be/nc3LJSYilqk (the waltz from 4:00 is as appealing as any by Tchaikovsky)

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

My thought is that he was only 20 years old when he wrote it and op. 2 is an early opus number, so maybe that concerto isn't representative of his best efforts.

I remember a waltz for two pianos by him (from a suite) that was once pretty popular. A teacher I had in my teens plopped the score in front of me at one lesson and we read through it. Later, I heard some professional recordings of it and thought it was a pleasant and engaging piece of its type. Although it is light-weight salon music, it is well-made and has a certain memorable quality that sticks in the mind. It surprises me that I can still remember the first theme, and some figuration.

Here's a lovely old historic recording of it I just found on YouTube -
