How much is a Yamaha P-80 worth to resell?

About 11 yrs ago I purchased a Yamaha P-80 keyboard for $1000. It's been a great keyboard for playing/learning, but times are tough and I need to sell it for a reasonable asking price.

Condition:
Everything works, 1 key was sticking and had to be fixed, other than that its never had any issues. It has a few scratches.

Includes bench, and piano stand.

Where's a good place to sell it? Craigslist, Ebay?? Ideas? And how much can I ask for it.

I doubt that someone who knows about DP's will pay you close to even half the original price, as there are better models that are new that can be bought in that region. But listing it for just above x99 might attract someone and you could go down in negotiation. I would not buy it at $100, but someone might at $600. Half or less is reasonable IMHO.

A good way to check value is to search for the item on eBay and then click the box for "sold items" to see what they have actually sold for lately. In this case, not counting one that was apparently owned by Lou Reed, the P80 has been going for in the range of roughly $250 to $500 including shipping.

I can't sell my p-80 for 100 or 250. I think the least I would sell it for would be 500 dollars. Because no one can buy a NEW digital piano at 500 dollars with the same quality as the P-80 has. Good quality DP's aren't 500 bucks, and a used p-80 is better than any new Dp/keyboard at a price $500 bucks I imagine.

But yeah I've seen them priced 250-800. If I sold it to a piano store they would lowball me and end up pricing it high.

Absolutely - you can't get a NEW digital piano for $500, as long as you ignore manufacturers like Yamaha, Casio and Korg.

You can complain and argue logic about the market prices as much as you want, but it won't change what someone's willing to pay for it. You might have seen one advertised at $800, but that doesn't mean they sold it (it's highly unlikely they did, at least not at that price). It's the actual selling prices that are important. New DPs only go for 50% of their original price after a year or two of use, so you're not going to get that for an old technology, used model with no warranty. For an 11 year old instrument you're looking at more like 20-30% of its original cost, depending on condition.

Looking on eBay the range for the P80 looks more like $150 - 350 to me, with the ones in the upper range coming with heavy duty stands and cases etc. Give most weight to the auctions with a lot of bidders.

eBay isn't a good place to sell, IMO, except as a last resort. Here in the UK there's 10% eBay fee, 3.4% + 20p Paypal fee, shipping charges, eBay and Paypal fees on shipping charges. The buyer pays shipping, but that just reduces the amount they'll be willing to bid, so effectively it costs you, the seller. Plus people won't be willing to pay as much for an item they haven't seen or tried in person. So advertise locally for best results. With the bench and stand, $350 seems a reasonable starting price, and if it doesn't sell, reduce it to $300 or less. I would probably sell the bench and stand as separate lots / optional extras.

Imagination has got nothing to do with it, and you're out of touch. List it then for 599 but be prepared to go down unless you hook a sucker.

Better yet: Donate it to a charity, and declare the piano's value as an income tax deduction. You might get more money that way. And a donation takes much less of your time than does a sale.

Can you claim tax for the full original price?

Thanks for all the great ideas guys! Yeah I guess DPs are like cars they just lose their value immediately.

I was looking at the Hybrid Pianos from Yamaha and I think its funny how they are trying to market it as a natural sound!! lol nice try Yamaha and with that picture of the woman pressing her ear up to the soundboard... But that's how it goes in marketing the big thing right now is organic and natural.

I just bought a cheap acoustic piano for the purpose of understanding the action mechanisms because I think it's more intriguing and there's certainly more craftsmanship that has gone into than a mass produced electronic.
