I posted this elsewhere, but it really should be here. There are multiple benefits to this exercise:

A good exercise for someone who wants to know what the relationship between wire gauges, length and tension is would be to look up the formula and make one's own spreadsheet. There is nothing real tricky about it, except maybe the conversion of units. The trickiest might be converting between the weight of the wire per unit length (density) to wire gauges, but that is merely understanding how volume relates to gauge. Once you have done this, you will understand a lot more about piano scales. You may also understand more about spreadsheets. You will never again have to pay anyone for this information.

If you get stuck, my version for Excel is here. Length is in inches, gauge is more exact than the available wire sizes, and tension is in pounds. Gauge is just a simple conversion of the wire sizes noting that in the range of gauges used for pianos, each half size increases the diameter by 0.001 inch.

A neat thing about scales, is that there is a lot to learn within. Not that it makes a difference, but I enjoyed learning about the Tension/Length ratio in the bass strings, and comparing what other designers in the past did. They seem to hover around 4.5 in larger pianos, but I have come across small grands that were down to 3.5.
