My son is 11 and entering a piece into the mtna composition competition. His composition teacher likes one piece, piano teacher another, myself a third, and his father another. Would you care to add your input? He played one in a couple recitals. (Just the first one in the youtube video. I had my daughter record as back up to me and it was a good thing- I messed up with my camera.)) The others are computer generated mp3s. I put them up on a reputable mp3 hosting site. Thank for listening!

Invention No. 1

Triple Trio Trouble

Trio in B

The Lobster

I would follow the advice of the composition teacher, if you believe he/she is competent. He/she is the presumed expert in the group, and the one that is most likely to be familiar with the criteria for judging. Also going against that teacher's opinion might create friction going forward if you plan to continue with that teacher.

The piano teacher's opinion would tend to be more relevant for a piano performance competition. Mom and Dad? Unless they have training and education, their opinions may not have much correlation with what the judges are looking for.

The composition teacher doesn't get all worked up about what my son enters into competitions. He didn't give an opinion, until I emailed and asked for one. (He likes The Lobster 1st and Invention second.) The piano teacher likes Trio in B and Triple Trio Trouble. I'm more inclined to go with the composition teacher's opinion.

I think I can understand why the composition teacher likes Lobster first... It also appeals to me more than the rest. It's more structured...

But go for the composition teachers opinion, as sand tiger said: (s)he's the expert here...

I also like The Lobster best. I also enjoyed the first half of Trio Trouble, but the slower part lost my interest. The invention is a nice piece but it doesn't really go anywhere.

There are many aspects in the process of learning composition. One of the first is writing interesting themes. The comes harmony and rhythm and finally structure. Of these pieces The Lobster is the one that best exhibits the latter.

Hope that helps.

Agree.

The student did good work with the invention as a technical exercise for learning the ins and outs of writing an invention. It's just that sometimes a technically sound invention exercise does not necessarily make an artistically appealing piece of music. Still, the student should be proud of his command of the techniques of writing invention. thumb

I second the composition teacher’s choice for The Lobster. It sounds like the most adventurist piece that maintains interest the best.

I think it’s biggest weakness is the ending. It makes the piece sound unfinished. I would think repeating the beginning of that section and ending it with a resolution would make The Lobster a much stronger entry.
