I was at the library today, and saw a book about Schubert (Schubert: a critical biography by MJE Brown). Thought other people might enjoy seeing this quote:

From a letter written by Schubert to his dad:

I too think it's funny when people criticize things that they don't understand. *cough cough*

"A good intention but fixed and resolute - bent on high and holy ends, we shall find means to them on every side and at every moment; and even obstacles and opposition will but make us 'like the fabled specter-ships,' which sail the fastest in the very teeth of the wind."
R. W. Emerson

Here is another fun quote, from when he was a younger man, living in Vienna, from his diary at the time.

Although I myself consider my Rastlose Liebe more successful than Amalia, it can't be denied that Goethe's genius for lyric poetry contributed much to the applause.

From these quotes I gather, much like other composers, Schubert was very driven to improve his skill.

And here is an interesting quote from two friends of the Schubert family. The first talking about Schubert, the second talking about Schubert's father. From this you can kind of get a taste of their relationship.
