Maybe someone here knows if the use of horizontal brackets to accomplish this in piano music as in the examples below is a standard accepted practice. If you use it, make sure to explain it somewhere in the score (or in a preface, especially if you use several unusual notations). That said, a score usually contains quite a number of horizontal or near-horizontal lines already, so maybe a horizontal bracket would not be your best bet. I'd suggest having a look at the scores of Harrison Birtwistle. He usually uses a forked arrow to indicate a phrase beginning somewhere in between the two arrowheads, or brackets with arrows for phrases to be played independently of the main tempo. His publisher, Boosey&Hawkes has a digital library where you can look at some scores: http://www.boosey.com/cr/perusals/browse.asp It's free but requires a registration. I have an ice cream. I'll have a look at Harrison Birtwistle's scores. In these examples the voices aren't independent of the other lines in tempo - the function of the brackets is to show that they are synchronous in tempo. As in example no. 6, a quarter note "A" starts on the same beat as half notes above and below it in pitch. In that type of scenario I would hate to have a third staff just on account of one tone, this would look very strange scored for solo piano no matter how it is done.
