RD-800: Live Sets and External MIDI

Hello all.
It is my first post here, so please be gentle with me. smile
After reading a lot of posts here, I'm about to make a decision on Roland RD-800.
But I have a question about how live sets works with external MIDI.

Is it possible to have some of the 4 parts in the live sets only responded to external MIDI, but not the local keyboard?
For example, I want piano on part 1 mapped to all 88 local keys and bass on part 2 only responded to external MIDI (sequencer).

I'm thinking about using keyboard range setting in live set.
If I set the range of a part to A0-A0, would it still respond to external MIDI notes outside that range?

This is probably not a deal breaker if it can't because I really like the sound and the keys.
But it would be nice to know if it could do that. (Then I probably wouldn't need to keep my old workstation around).

Thank you in advance. laugh

Hi siros
Live sets works like this:
1-the internal 4 parts with the 4 buttons you can switch on/off
Tha't only for the internal parts.
2-you push the midi contol button, and you can access here to a menu where you control the external parts controlled by midi, with the same switch on/off
This is not in this mode the 4 internal parts switch.

So if you want to edit a live set who only control external parts but but not local keyboard,it's simple:
Switch all the normal parts(no internal sounds..)and push midi control.
After that, switch on/off the 4 external parts you want to control, and it's ok!

For keyboard range:
You have so much parameters to assign to control external parts(download the owner's manual, and you will see all the parameters available in the midi control menu),and if you want to control a special keyboard range for a external part you can do this.
No problem it will respond only for the range you selected.

Conclusion:
The RD800 can do what you asked without problem.
Good news!

The RD-800 can play 16 parts (MIDI channels 1-16) at the same time, so this shouldn't be a problem. Channels 1-4 are mapped to the four layers in the Live Set, the others are for external control. It's probably easier to just have the sequencer select a bass sound on a higher channel and use that instead of using a live set. Then you can change live sets independently of what the sequencer is doing.

I sometimes use my NX as a sound module for Band-in-a-Box while playing various live sets myself, works just fine. The hardest part is getting the levels right.

Probably, but it's possible that you can turn off the layer using the button above the fader and still play it via MIDI.

I did that:
I have edited a live set with a external part assigned to a special range i programmed,it works perfectly.
No control outside the range :-)
If you turn the external part button off,you put off the external part assigned and you can't play it via midi.

Thank you for the answers.
My situation is similar to torhu. I want to use external sequencer to play bass/drum or backing track on RD-800, while I'm playing other sounds on the keys.
The reason I want to use the parts in live set is that they can use effects. It would be nice if the parts are EP or organ.

The trick to turn off the layer is interesting. I will check it out.

I'm not playing the rd800 on stage with a sequencer(more to control external sounds from my integra7 if i need that),but at home i'm composing with the rd800 as the master keyboard, controlling the 16 track sequencer of my KOrg PA3x.
Controlling chanels, muting midi tracks(like you want to do,or muting internal parts etc etc)...is really efficient and pleasant with the roland.
All that works perfectly, and playing external midi sounds from the rd keybed is so cool!

It's one of the reason who makes me love the rd 800:
It's an efficient and clear midi controller for all the essential things you need, but not too complicated like my kurzweil with so many things you not really necessary need.

Like i said, check the owner's manual and go to read what you can do with the midi control mode.
You will find a lot of answers:-)
