Who stuck around to the bitter end?

How's it going? I read some complaining on the course forums about the final being too difficult. I have been steadfast in ignoring the assignments, so it doesn't bother me.

Using the same strategy, I pulled a 0.0% in my gender studies class which is exactly what I expected. (The language of instruction was Spanish, and I wanted something to listen to besides telenovelas!)

I stopped after the second week. I like to learn at my own pace. It wasn't a good fit for me.

I didn't have the time to do it this time round, though I would be quite keen to do it another time. I learned a lot of theory when I was younger but it would be really good to do a refresh.

I'm enjoying the course. I've finished the lectures and quizzes and I'm planning to tackle the final exam this weekend.

I was already familiar with things like modes and functional harmony in a jazz context, so most of the course is not overwhelming to me, like it is for some folks; still, I am learning a lot.

Best of all, for me: Listening to the Bach Prelude in the final lesson, and going through the analysis of it, was a great experience for me on many levels!

I still need to finish the 5th week videos, and I'll tackle the piece analysis this weekend.

The material became much more complex in the fourth week, and the fourth week's quiz was the first one where I was guessing at some of the answers instead of really knowing the answer.

I didn't get a chance to participate in the google hangout sessions, but I really appreciate how much extra time and effort the professors have put in, including the extra videos.

My plan after the course is to keep going through the Tonal Harmony book.

I'm still there.

The course was almost entirely review for me, but I'm glad I took it. I enjoyed the video lectures, I enjoyed the discussions, and I learned about the challenges people face learning music theory.

As a course, I think it was really difficult for people with no prior experience, even though it was billed as "no experience required." So I think in some ways it's better to think of it as a resource than as a course. I think usimg the forums there to ask questions was an incredibly important part of the course. The biggest piece missing in my view for beginners was a series of progressive exercises in each unit that would guide and guve practice to bridge from the basic information given in the videos to the more complex applications asked about on the assessments. Plus they three a harmonic analysis assignment at us for the final exam with no effective preparation for how to do it, which I find inexplicable. They expected students to do a lot of reading and essentially self-study, but I would have preferred to see them provide more supports and guidance for that study.

The other thing about it is that it's a lot of information to absorb in just 5 weeks. Which leads back to considering it as a resource that one will use and absorb at whatever rate works for them, rather than necessarily expecting to master it all during the short duration of the course. I could also see taking the course several times, and aiming to get just one week farther into the course each time through.

I am still doing it. I appreciate all the time the teachers, especially Zack have put in to provide extra help. Much of the course has been review for me but I agree it would be quite challenging and moves really fast for people with no experience in music. I am really grateful that they gave an extension on the final. While I have analyzed piano music, it has consisted of just writing the chords in the score. I have never done the kind of analysis required for the final but I am going to try.

I watched all the lectures and did the quizzes, but skipped the final assignment. Weeks 4 and 5 were a bit tough, even if I had already taken the Write like Mozart course which was much more detailed about harmony. My "problem" was that I only watched the videos, and didn't bother with the additional material and suggested readings, so some of the answers in the quizzes were hard to figure out. But I found the course very nice!
