Hello, I am hoping to find an excellent instruction book for composing music for the piano. I read music and play the piano at the intermediate level but have never studied theory, harmony or the basics of composing. I have experimented but lack the basic knowledge of actually putting the music on paper. Would someone be able to provide a good reference to a text on composing? I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Hello, I haven't yet received an answer to my question regarding a text for piano composition. Specifically, I am looking for an instruction book with clear-cut instruction teaching the harmony, theory and chords for composing. I would be grateful for suggestions so that I may move ahead. There are so many texts out there to choose from that a recommendation by a knowledgeable musician/composer would be a huge help.Thanks.

Hi Lynn. No-one seems to look at this Chopin sub-forum, let alone post on it. I’m not even sure why it’s here - you’ll notice that the post before yours is 4 years old! You might try asking your question in the main part of the Composers’ forum, or perhaps in the Pianists’ corner, where quite a few knowledgeable people hang out. I’m not up on the latest in composition texts so I can’t really help you out. Best wishes.
