You all have been patient, helpful, and a terrific resource- my 6,000.00 piano hunt has taken me to a number of interesting places, and I'm compelled to share...

catching them on eBay, a NJ dealer, Amadeus Piano, offers two interesting items. They'll be awaiting my visit next weekend:

Weber wg57, new, 6500
Rieger Kloss 5'2", new (but from YC years) 7500
(Young Chang hasn't made either of these versions in a while, right? They must have been sitting for some time)

I want a tech to look at a private sale in my state, a 1978 M&H 5'4"....6,000.....

I also intend to look at Altenburg's version of the 5'2" Samick (not a veneered soundboard), and I haven't honed in on their price.

But, I have to tell you, some of the Dongbei 5'5" instruments just don't sound all that bad when I play them!
Particularly, at Sbordone's in fishkill, NY, where they have their name on the product, there's one I really like.

May I have any thoughts on the two Young Chang products I'm going to be trying next week, or any of the other options?

Even being a Chinese piano, a few inches can make a lot of difference in a small grand. In the Dongbei pianos, make sure you compare the Nordiska with the Abels, to a piano that doesn't have them - may not make a dime's worth of difference, but you don't know till you hear. Also, there is not a ton of money difference between the 5'5", and the 6', and you may want to explore that option.

I'm like you, I'd certainly check out the R-K, and the Weber. The current made in Korea Weber is a WGS-57, and is a nice piano for the money. Of course, there are some Chinese Webers, also, so I'm not eure about the model number(and I'm too lazy to look right now laugh ).

Thanks for the reply-he's got both, Jolly: the wg-157 is something like 4800.00 in his shop, while he wants 6k for the Korean wg57.

Good point on the Nordiska....I can't find a local dealer to try one out....was told that PianoPiano has them, but I can't get a straight answer from the sales person when I call them ("we have some Nordiska models, but not every one...why not come down, blablabla"). They also took the Nordiska moniker off their site, so I'm skeptical about driving 60 miles just to be told something else would be better for me.

Say, anyone know of a good local attorney for my upcoming libel defense?? whome

If the 5'7" Weber is the old model Korean (not the special edition), it sold for around 9-10K.

If this is new old stock, I'd certainly be looking at the Korean, it's a very good deal, provided there is nothing wrong with the piano.

Yes, Jolly, that's the model, WG-57....when I was in the shop it was on its side in shrinkwrap, so I asked for it to be set up, etc.

I also have a call into the Weber factory to check on shop's status as an authorized dealer.

I will have a look this weekend....
Is the Weber a slam dunk over the 5'2" Rieger Kloss, at 1 - 1.5k more?

That one is to be set up as well....

I think, the Rieger&Kloss is far superior to the Weber, except for the size. Also, at $7500 it's a steal, including Renner action, and Renner or Abel hammers (don't remember)
I played the Rieger&Kloss 5'2 (it's actually closer to 5'3 :-)), and it sounded great. Was a little thin in the bass section, but had a beautiful, singing sound, and an incredible action.

You might want to chunk an email, or private message, Larry's way. When he was still in the piano biz, he handled both pianos.

He'll know the good, the bad, and the ugly about both of them.

Jolly:

Many thanks- Larry delivered a VERY helpful reply, in favor of the Weber wg57.

What I've found out, afterwards, is that Amadeus is NOT an authorized dealer....Weber replied to me that while they do sell pianos to them, they would not warrant them.

Therefore, the warranty is with Amadeus itself (he offers 10 years p&l, fwiw). I've found nothing negative searching BBB, and a search of this forum places them in business as far back as at least 2001.

It sure as h*** looked brand new on its side in shrink wrap, but as I said, it will be playable this weekend. If I get a tech in there to look, at 6k..........
Dealbreaker??????

Not for me.

Approach this as a used piano purchase, from a private party - you wouldn't get any warranty at all going that route.

If the piano checks out with your tech, and the dealer warranties it, and you like the piano, it's more than worth 6K (even if it was used, and 3 or 4 years old), IMO.

Jolly, Larry, and all who responded, thank you so much!

I'll see it this weekend, and oh, i forgot to mention-

It's not just a WG57, it's a prototype Weber, handmade in the original Weber factory, unlike any other Weber!!! whome
