I'm new so I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question.

I’ve an old Yamaha PSR1000 keyboard, this only records to floppy discs (yes that old but working perfectly) and I want to create mp3 files from the stuff I record on it on my Compaq 6910p laptop. I will then upload them to “Box.”

I’m presently recording “stuff” on a little Lumix camera, uploading it to YouTube, then downloading that as an MP3. Consequently the quality is a bit rubbish, (both content and reproduction!)

I’ve downloaded Audacity and the Yamaha CBX driver.

Can someone tell me what leads I need and then how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Forget the floppies unless your computer has a floppy drive .

According to p. 153 in the manual, you will need a cable like this which you will plug into the L/R output from the PSR1000 and plug the 1/8" stereo end into the audio input on your laptop. Open Audacity and create a track and try recording. You should be able to get sound that way.

The floppies I did try on an old PC I had which took floppies and CDRoms which I'd hoped to then transfer to my laptop, but the soundcard on the PC couldn't cope with the floppies.

The Yamaha handbook talks about a "Host" cable connection and the piano has a dedicated socket for that.
When I spoke to Dawsons recently, who supplied the piano (all of thirteen years ago) they just looked blank when I mentioned a "host" cable.
As well as RCA aux, GPO jackplug sockets and midi in and out, I guess there must be a way of sorting this. it's just a question of getting the computer to recognise the connection. I'm expecting the cable to arrive on Friday.

The "host" cable is actually the same kind of cable you use to plug in your USB printer. The host part is the squareish end (I know, I'm getting really technical here ). You would use that for MIDI, however, not audio recording. You certainly can go that route, only you would then have to record the MIDI playback as audio, so an added extra step. Best to try keeping it all audio first and see what kind of quality you get from that. If it's bad (depending upon the quality of your soundcard), then you can look into going the MIDI route.
