I am looking at buying my 6 year old daughter her first piano to play. I was thinking I would buy something decent so that I wouldn't have to trade up right away. I went to a piano consignment store and found a Baldwin E250 1998 (SN: 471465). It looks like it is in good condition. They are asking $2995 for the piano. I've tried googling information about it, but have been seeing some mixed reviews in general on Baldwin pianos similar to E250. It does have the plaque inside saying it was American made. Do you think this is a good first piano and is the price decent? Thanks a lot for your comments in advance!

Hi Sort,

The Baldwin E250 was a Baldwin Hamilton with a high polish and more modern looking cabinet. At the time this piano was made, Baldwin was seeing a significant amount of manufacturing inaccuracies in their vertical pianos, particularly in action work.

These issues are easily corrected by a piano technician with some time and experience, but I have seen a number of these in the market that have not had this remedial work done. IMHO, if the piano is in proper (well regulated and tuned) condition and there is a warranty, this is a fair price.

I would recommend having the piano examined by an independent piano technician.

Good Luck,

Hi Rich,
Thanks so much for your reply. As you recommended I'll take a technician to look at the piano at the store...
Speaking of technicians, how do I find one? Google, yelp or craigslist? Is there any other ways? I don't know much about pianos in general, so any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

This is a solid performer built like a tank and if it had a very good initial preparation there should be no issues of any concern. If it did not get a good prep initially any issued that it has can be corrected most of the time. I would echo Rich on getting an RPT to evaluate it. That will be money well spent.
