Heard this song a couple of times on the soft rock / 80's stations. It's not that obscure and has a unique sound - pretty recognizable IMO.

Problem is I can't make out the lyrics when I'm listening to the actual song so I can't look it up that way.

Here's some details that I remember:
- Sounds like it's from the late 70's or early 80's.
- A couple of male voices singing melody softly in harmony. Glockenspiel/bells sound follows melody an octave higher.
- Song tempo is 'Up Tempo'; maybe around 'quarter note=170'
- 8th-note synth-bass line that repeats an ostinato pattern.

This is what my ear tells me is going on. Here's an 8-measure piano score I threw together:

It might just be from a well-known pop/rock band of that era, but I haven't pieced it together yet.
It's driving me nuts! Maybe one of you all who lived through the 80's can help me out. Thanks! smile

Sorry, doesn't look familiar to me. Have you tried one of those sites which can identify songs if you sing some of the melody? It can work sometimes.

Try http://www.namemytune.com/ and see if anyone there can help you out.

I believe it's "Steppin' Out," by Joe Jackson.

Slowtraveler, that's it! Thank you so much. Funny I never had Joe Jackson in mind. I will check out some of his other stuff. I've had Steppin Out as an ear worm for the past few days so maybe finally knowing the song's name will alleviate it. :-)
Thanks again!

@ mc9320,
Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I did indeed try those sites but no hits. I suppose they can't have every melody ever written in their databases. I had the Parsons code and even the actual note names of the melodic line but it still didn't match anything. I guess it just took the good old fashioned collective human memory database! smile

Gaah! I hate when that happens. I'm susceptible, too, and to make matters worse I sometimes even go around humming or singing fragments of whatever's stuck in my brain, like some kind of musical Tourette's Syndrome.

Congrats to slowtraveler. God I remember this tune! I'm sure it's been covered several times.
