That was nice Custard. I love Bill Evans. You seem to have a very wide appreciation of many styles of jazz. And that's one of the great things about threads like this one: links to jazz I've never heard before.

Thank you Mark and Sunny.

I'm finding that singing the Bach chorale lines for ear-training is really helping me with internalising the alto and tenor voices.

Hey CATS
It's been a pleasure for me to learn Shostakovich's C maj prelude which is a masterpiece in voice-leading.
Thanks for listening to me play it.

Oh my, that was nice Custard. I'm really impressed by your broad approach to learning a subject like voice leading.

That is a beautiful prelude.

Thank you Sunny, Mark and Knotty for your kind comments.

Sunny
I really like that falling in love tune, I hope you had a lot of fun harmonising it.
It's great the way you take chunks of standards to apply voice-leading.
Nice work.

Sunny, can you post a recording of that played on a piano? ... rather than MIDI? It's really nice ... could you talk about how you put it together?

Thank you Knotty, Custard and Mark. I do love that tune and it was fun doing.

Mark, I'm sorry but that is me playing my fifteen year-old digital frown I know I need a new piano, but that thing refuses to die. Yamahas are the Volvos of electronic pianos. This morning I tried recording with a mic (rather than direct to the computer) and it was much worse - it picked up the key noise which is very bad.

could you talk about how you put it together?

Once I realized that I wasn't able to memorize music any more I came up with a cheat sheet method that would let me learn and play tunes in different keys. (Playing the same tune in different keys helps me learn the tune & also helps me learn voicing). I made up this ALBIL sheet several months ago. I do it in Excel. The pdf fits nicely on an ipad. First I take the changes from a real book source and then add basic reharm using tri-tone subs and secondary dominants. My ear is very conservative. My jazz ear is stuck in the fifties (the golden age of jazz smile ) Then I wrote out the four voices using the following web site as a source.
Theory
I realize my example is not very chorale-like. I'm still thinking vertically.

Here's my sheet. I use these for learning and transposing. All chords are seventh chords. The little numbers are voicing tips.

Sorry for the lengthy post.

SunnyF,

That's really nice and a very clever way to work. One the one hand what you've done isn't all that chorale-like. In the sense that the 4 voices in a chorales are ideally equally good, independent, and vocal in character.

But on the other hand you've got a great sound and approach to harmony. Your system w/Excel simply works. It sounds good on a keyboard. Maybe worth mentioning is some of the harmonies w/4ths don't show up in jazz until the 60s. Maybe your ear is less conservative than you think smile

Thanks for sharing that - and for explaining ..., hope you'll post more ....

then I realized the title was "being" in love, not falling. Cus "fell" for it too. What's funny is that it hit me in my sleep. I heard Nat King Cole sing it in my dreams smile

That was very nice to Custard. Good tempo, and all the voices were easy to hear. Beautiful chorale too.

Thanks very much Sunny. I agree Bach's lines in this chorale were gorgeous.
See you in a few weeks as I will be going overseas tomorrow.
Take care.

Thank you knotty and Mark. I couldn't find a chorale recording to play along to, so I learnt it with a metronome.

I've written two Two-Voice Compositions and posted them on the Composers' Forum (with trepidation) if you would care to listen. Thanks!

Hi Sunny
Thanks for posting your compositions, this was an amazing effort !
I must have been on holidays so missed your post.
I like your first one in particular. To work in two voices for so many phrases must have been a real challenge, so well done.
