I had heard this on YouTube but yesterday was the first time I heard it live in a concert at the IKIF. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFY-CPWcTGYThe pianist was the quite terrific Gabrielle Leporatti. I think this sonata is a masterpiece although it's so unbearably sad that it's a gut wrenching experience to listen to it. The sonata commemorates the death of a worker and its two movements are entitled 1.Forboding 2.Death What do think of this piece?

I heard Spencer Myer play it in Oberlin a few years ago. A great piece that should be better known.

There were three movements, but Janacek tried to destroy the sonata and only the two movements survived.

Best piece from Janacek for me! So sad and deep... I study in Brno, where the story, that inspired Janacek to write this sonata happened.
In my country he is very very well known and so many piano students here play his works, this is the only piece from him I can listen over and over and not get bored!
And I agree, this Sonata deserves more attention!

In the UK, this Sonata is more frequently played (and broadcast on radio) than, say, Rachmaninov's 2nd Sonata. It's certainly not neglected.
Neither is his 'On an Overgrown Path' or 'In the Mists'.

It's a masterpiece for sure. I've given it a look from time to time - the writing is very awkward in places, but the quality of the music is definitely worth the struggle.

Brahms comes to mind here.

Discovered this Sonata a few years ago, along with Janacek in general. A real gem.
In The Mists is also a masterpiece in my opinion, and also very sad. On the Overgrown Path has some fantastic pieces as well. Janacek's piano music is really great, and a bit underplayed.

An very powerful piece and incredibly original writing.
It can be too powerful - a friend of mine went to the trouble of learning it, but discovered it was just too disturbing to play and had to put it aside.

I love all of Janacek's piano music, but the Sonata is really special. It could be straight out of one of his operas.. very powerful and vivid.
